Trade Deadline Possibilities 2021

My only wish is to re sign Correa and announce that at the deadline.

He is absolutely the singular leader of this team.

The current squad clearly competes well against Red Sox, Rays, A’s, Indians.

Why do we have to accept the cycle-down when we know that $66 million annually comes off the payroll with Greinke and Verlander at the end of this season?

I think we are bidding against ourselves after 8 for $240. Lindor’s performance this season must have lowered the ceiling.

Hopefully some of that $66MM goes to fund a couple of pitchers and not just Correa’s ego.

But Correa’s has raised it right back up.

Reports are out that a Nelson Cruz deal to the Rays is being finalized.

From ESPN:

Ok here is my latest, and greatest wish:

If the Astros seriously want to maximize their chances to win a world series this season they MUST get at least one top bullpen arm and an ace starter would be welcome.

How about Scherzer AND Hand for Urquidy, Toro, Solis, and Bielak.

I would also expect Scherzer to sign a deal similar to the one Verlander signed prior to last year.

I love Urquidy but you can’t get stars without giving up something and he is the odd man out in the rotation.

I like Toro but again, someone has to go that Washington will actually value. They need a 3B for next year and the future. Besides, once Alex and Diaz return he is now back to being a spare part for this and likely next year.

Solis and Bielak just fill out the deal. Bielak is a useful if inconsistent innings eater bullpen arm and Solis is a lottery ticket. Importantly to the Astros, they are both on the 40 man roster.

Pressly and Hand handle the 8th and 9th innings the rest of the year and playoffs.

Scherzer, Grienke, McCullers, Framber, Garcia, and Odorizzi make up the rotation the rest of the season and in 2022.

Garcia and Odorizzi ( if he makes post season roster) move to bullpen for the playoffs.

Javier is insurance.

Too rich for a guy I think is falling off.

Didn’t he miss his last start with some injury?

Not that it has anything to do with Scherzer, but isn’t that what people said about Verlander in about 2016? Scherzer has had some injury issues, but perhaps a change of scenery will do him good.

Scherzer has a 2.83 ERA this year, he’s had some injury concerns but falling off he is not. He’s almost as good as ever by the numbers.

That said, that’s not enough to get the deal done. For Scherzer alone, maaaaybe but probably not, to get Hand also for that package? Not a chance

Agree. Spare parts (not Urquidy) for frontliners ideas abound at Deadline time.

I don’t know, I think it’s a fair offer. Now that doesn’t mean other teams won’t pay more.

Let’s compare it to the Verlander deal:

Astros got Verlander with another year of control, a PTBNL and $8mil for the 3rd, 9th, and 11th

Scherzer and Hand both are rentals.

Urquidy is an established 4th/5th starter who was a top 10 prospect, Toro was a top 5 prospect before graduating and has shown enough to prove he belongs, Solis is current #22 prospect, and Bielak was a top 10 prospect and has shows flashes.

Was does not count. What counts is only Is.

You offer spare parts and Irquidy for front line players.

Doubt the Astros could acquire him but it just came across the wire that the Twins and Buxton have been unable to come to agreement on an extension. Trade very likely.

Can he pitch?

The Astros in 2017 had one of the best farm systems in baseball, that is so not the case now. Perez and Cameron would be top 5 in our farm right now based on where they were in 2017. I like Urquidy and if he was 22 then he could headline a package for Scherzer but he’s 26 and how much upside does he really have? He’s not going to be a number 1 or number 2, maybe not even a number 3. Toro could be a good major leaguer but he’s 24 and isn’t showing that much. Solis has talent but he hasn’t pitched since 2018?

That’s not even close to enough to get that done.

The MLB Trade Simulator would seem to indicate this trade is unlikely. It has this deal as a pretty big overpay on the part of Houston. Not sure about that, it’s s a fun an interesting tool to play with. Heard the talking heads on MLB Radio talking about it. Obviously it can’t take intangibles into play, but I think it gives you a pretty decent idea of how players at the majors and minors are valued.

I think this deal won’t happen because Houston won’t pay for the contract extension.

Overpay???

The simulator takes into account certain variables such as age, AFV, salary and performance and Urquidy is rated quite highly because not only is he good, he’s controllable.

Not saying I agree, just saying it is fun to play with.

Scherzer and Hand’s values take a hit because they are rentals. Urquidy is valued twice as high as Scherzer because he is controllable. No doubt in one game which one you would take.
