Trade Deadline Possibilities 2021

I meant more the difference between Straw and Chaz, which Coach answered nicely.

True, as long as he can stay in the lineup. Which is why I really wanted Marte for some cover. Keep our fingers crossed.

Bregman will compensate for Straw. Man, this is getting better and bettter.

Jake Meyers is a plus defender that can play all 3 OF positions.

Ok.

Now that I have taken a few breaths and calmed down.

I think the team is worse today than yesterday. McCormick/Meyers needs to be at least as good as Straw/McCormick to change my mind. The team already has too many RP who walk too many batters.

I think the team is better today than it was 4 days ago. Graveman alone does that but adding 4 RPs helps. If 2 of them work out that’s 25% of the bullpen.

Straw was traded at his max value, getting a RP with 2+ yrs of control and a lottery ticket young catcher. Since I didn’t see him as a long term starter, this is a good deal for the big picture. Just not a good deal for 2021.

The team is not as deep in position players. I hope everyone stays healthy.

Lots to say.

When Toro was traded Straw was quoted as saying something to the effect of "lots of guys have left Astros and gone on to do good things - Teoscar, JD, etc. Maybe he had been forewarned that he could have been moved.

Meyers stats are certainly worthy of call up. We aren’t asking him to bat 3rd. Between McCormick and Meyers we have two guys that can drive the ball. I liked Straw, but he has absolutely no pop in the bat - though he uses his tools to the highest potential.

I hated seeing Maton pitch against us. I know he isn’t the biggest guy, but Indians grow pitchers on trees. Maybe a starter down the road. Certainly interchangeable with Stanek in the 6th or 7th. And maybe this allows us to move back to the 6 m an rotation using Javier. He just hasn’t been the same in relief.

Lastly (sorry for being windy Coach), MLB has a serious problem when the Cubs dump their roster and the Dodgers throw so much money at it that its impossible imagining anyone beating them in the WS unless their relief pitching comes completely unglued.

Not sure how to solve the issue, but $300,000,000 payroll simply isn’t good for the league - go Giants, go Padres.

Having Straw or Meyers in Sugarland as insurance against injury or bad play is not getting nothing from the move. Maybe Cleveland would not have accepted any deal other than Straw but I doubt it. Now if Chas can’t handle an everyday role and Meyers isn’t a good major leaguer, we have a huge hole in CF. Maton better be good

God, stop. Worse? You are nuts. Straw’s loss makes them worse?

Fucking crazy and hilarious at the same time.

Straw, Toro, and De La Cruz were spare parts. Fine players but fungible. Click turned them into a new bullpen. That’s what the team needed.

I fucking give up. I thought Straw could play, but I did not realize he was essential to the team’s success.

Hilarious

Jake Meyers is a helluva baseball player and I think a lot of Astros fans bashing the trade of Straw are going to be proven wrong by Meyers. There is nothing Straw brought to the lineup that Meyers won’t do better. He’s an excellent defender with speed who can hit for average and power.

We improved the bullpen for sure. Nice job by Click. Only problem now as I see it is the bench. Everyone has to stay healthy. If they all stay healthy, Diaz is you best bat off the bench. He’s good but behind him? Ugh. If Diaz is forced into the lineup on a daily basis for some reason, it ain’t good. If you had asked me a week ago if Robel would still be on active roster today I would have said no. I thought we would have improved our options there. Hopefully we have with Meyers. Really looking forward to seeing him play, just as I was Robel. I like seeing new players. Let’s just hope his bat off the bench is better than Garcia’s.

Essential? No but he held down the fort. I like Chas as a 4th outfielder, not a starting CF. I hope I’m wrong I honestly do, I was wrong about Straw before. I just don’t like trading starting caliber players when you’re trying to win the WS. That’s all

Bashing the Straw trade is amazing, and while I have not seen Meyers play, the Astros must agree with your assessment.

I think Click had a helluva good trade deadline. When Straw was announced, I had hopes of Whit Merrifield as CF now, potential replacement for CC next year. Pipe dream. That said, team must have like Meyers more than Straw and have McCormick as a safety net. No issues with what we did. But have to credit A’s, Yankees, Toronto (Berrios) all for getting significantly better. Red Sox have a big lead but they better not slip. A’s fixed the lineup (though not sure why they wanted Gomes over Murphy). Will be a fun 60 game race.

Straw took shit every day here, and now he is Cedeno? He was starting in CF because the brain trust thought there was no one better. They have changed their minds.

I never said anything about him being Cedeno. He’s an average MLB CF

I think that McCormick will be just as good as Straw.

And unlike many, I think he is a better defender.

My issue that I don’t know if Meyers will be better than Straw.

In my opinion, the bullpen was improved at the expense of the bench and position player depth which was not a strength.

As long as there are no Injuries, all should be fine.

The only thing I’m disappointed in is not adding a front line starter. The bullpen is better, which has been a weak link for most of the season. Give McCormick/Meyers a shot. Surely they can come close to replacing .262/.339/.326.

Not you. Perhaps you should watch Chas play CF before you pass judgment on him. You were wrong about Straw, and you are wrong about Chas.
