No way he believes this.
He’s got a WS contender. He’s trying to improve chances, not get over a hump.

I don’t think he believes that either. What I’m saying is that there is no way the draft pick compensation stops him from making a deal.
Exactly!
Or maybe he sees the postseason as a lottery and unless a player can actually improve your odds substantially, it’s not worth it. Imo Scherzer was the one move that would have drastically improved you’re odds other than maybe Kimbrel. But we’ve also seen Kimbrel crumble in the postseason before
Yes, this could absolutely be the reason we do nothing else. And I could live with that reason. If there is no one out there that you think is good enough to make you better, stay put. But I just refuse to believe that a deal for a quality player, if he could help us, wouldn’t be made because of some potential draft picks.
I think these last two hours are going to be a lot of fun. Cubs still need to move some folks as do the Twins. Sounds like Buxton heating up.
I sure would like an extra bat. We don’t NEED it, but I’m worried about a certain someone who has missed quite a bit of time this year.
I think that’s part of it, and the other thing to consider is how much of your cheap talent do you want to part with to upgrade the roster for this season. With Greinke and Verlander free agents after the season, are you comfortable possibly giving up one of Urquidy, Garcia or Javier in a deal for a rental or a closer like Kimbrel that has a team option for 14 or 15 million next season? Plus, you are also still trying to sign Correa long term or must spend in free agency to replace him if he leaves.
Unfortunately, most of the Astros’ best young talent is already at the MLB level and playing key roles for the current team.
If the Astros were to acquire a starting pitcher, I’d be targeting players with multiple years of control like Gibson, Marquez, Means, Kyle Hendricks, or maybe reclamation projects like Luis Castillo and Sonny Gray with the Reds. I’d only have interest in a rental like Michael Pineda if the cost was really cheap.
Go get us one more solid bullpen arm and have that team pickup the needed salary to stay under the threshold. I’m still hoping for Iglesias.
According to Jeff Passan, Kimbrel is heading to the White Sox.
This really hurts.
You can say that again.
This really, really hurts.
The freaking out is silly to me. Click already made two significant additions to the bullpen this week. Would Kimbrel have been nice? Sure. But, it’s not like Click has twiddled his thumbs during the deadline.
I don’t think it hurts that bad. I think it pinches.
I think high end closers are overrated in the playoffs.
I want to post these here and see what changes

Kimbrell to White Sox
( edit: oops a bit late)
Cubs got pretty good return for Kimbrel. Cubs may be moving Baez now…
The Cubs got Nick Madrigal for a closer. At that price, I’m glad Click passed.
Sigh. Getting to the playoffs is not the point here.
