I could get on board with bringing Charlie Morton back for the rest of the season if the Braves were sellers and the price was right. I’d also give Wade Miley some thought if the price was right. He’s quietly having a good season. We would just have to hope he doesn’t implode again like in 2019.
Morton is part of my dream.
Yes to either or both.
Since we are talking about upgrading the bullpen
What is your ( everyone) opinion of using a designated closer in non-save situations.
I know it’s strictly mental and therefore different for each person.
But there have been many documented instances of closers not pitching well unless a save is on the line.
Both games where Pressly gave up runs recently were not save situations.
The evidence of my eyes says they almost always suck at it.
Garcia acquired in exchange for Sugar Land OF Bryan De La Cruz. De La Cruz was a minor league free agent this past offseason and would have been again at the end of this year unless the Astros placed him on the 40-man roster.
Or saving money for The Big One
Click probably knows where he stands in relation to the luxury tax threshold down to the penny. But based on Spotrac’s estimates, after the Yimi Garcia trade, the Astros would be about $500k under the threshold.
That makes me wonder about how Graveman’s performance bonuses play into the calculations. He’s got a $500k incentive for pitching 60 innings and another $500k for being on the active roster for 150 days. Seems like either or both of those could vest. And it looks like there’s a $1.5M incentive for finishing 40 games too–which leads me to believe you’ll rarely see him in the ninth inning for the rest of the season unless the Astros blow past the threshold by getting a “Big One.”
I am relying on reports Crane said the luxury tax is not a factor.
I don’t think the owner who pushed his GM into making the Verlander and Greinke deals is going to balk at a luxury tax hit for Scherzer. If the deal’s there, he’ll do it, tax be damned.
There’s no sense in barely going over the tax. If you’re gonna go over then you might as well be way over. This way(being just under) you can swing for the fences with a Scherzer and if you miss then at least you’re still under the tax and still made your team better
I find this interesting:
Not surprised at all. Mack Brown had someone monitor fan sites.
Appreciate your information/updates on prospects - like this!
Just found what turned out to be yesterday’s “going away” Skeeters spotlight recap of De La Cruz.
Yimi needs some big time help. I hope he gets the tutelage from Strom that can turn him around. Frustrating is the word.
I don’t like to necessarily look at ERA so much with relievers because one bad game can torpedo and ERA for a reliever. For instance, Garcias ERA currently stands at 3.47, he gave up 4 runs in one inning against the Braves July 4th. Take that game out and his ERA drops to 2.55. Take out another 3 run game in June and his ERA drops to 1.8. I know you can’t really do that because those 2 games happened but everybody has a bad game and I’m just illustrating that ERA for relievers can be pretty fickle.
Instead I look at games pitch and how many games giving up a run. Garcia has pitched in 39 games and given up an ER in 9 or them(2 games that he gave up an unearned run).
Can’t say enough good things about Toro. Knowing what the reaction of the fans and that clubhouse was would have been awfully discouraging but he hasn’t let things faze him. Congrats to him!
