The Void: 2022-23 Offseason

Mets land SP Senga on 5 year deal. Man are they really pouring it on. Something tells me this is going to spill over into Yankees camp. Hope I am wrong.

Let them spend themselves into oblivion.

Rumor I saw is that Yankees are closing in on Rodón. I wonder if they’ll give in on his request for 7 years.

The Yankees cannot overspend. It is mathematically impossible. They have to to find a way to beat the Astros, no matter the cost.

I’m worried it’s Rodon, Correa and maybe Benentendi that will be added by Yanks.

I’m not “worried”. The Yankees always have, and always will, get the players they want. They will eventually overwhelm everyone else again, and they will gloat about their acumen in “developing” talent the old fashioned way. It’s one of the realities of MLB. But I am enjoying kicking their ass in the meantime.

I am bit non-descript about all of these moves by our competitors. The mad rush to get something in some hyperbaric chamber of an orgiastic black Friday spending spree always seems to be fraught with amnesia (big fucking contracts like Pujols, Cano, and the ultimate reminder Bonilla) as if over-manly hype like overspending takes balls.

Not sure there is ever one moment that solves multiple problems, it is more likely a series of moments/people/ideas, learned and innate consistencies, plus an on-going attention to the obstacles preventing getting better. This is why the Astros have been so dominant imo ----> focused on getting better not all at once, but building it day by day.

Let NY, LA, and Dallas try to buy it all in one full swoop. When they face adversity, they’ll wash their hands of the situation through new hires, rinse and repeat.

Crazy.

I would argue the Yankees having a 200M+ payroll 20 years ago is more extreme than 300 now

Growing up a Yankees fan. Loved to see them win with nettles catch and all. But moved to Houston, became more stros fan than Yankee. Kinda like ateinbrenner was buying wins. Like history of Yankees, not at all for a very long time

I really hope we can get him!

$13 billion net worth; luxury tax a rounding error

I hope we can get him too but I don’t see him coming back as a part time catcher/DH.

Radio speculation Friday was that the Astros were back to going after him and supposedly offering a longer multi-year deal in order to entice him to come back. FWIW.

Hope all of that about Vazquez is true. He would be the best catching solution, and maybe Machete’s feathers will not be ruffled by Vazquez getting a larger role.

ETA: I have started thinking Korey Lee may be offered in trades. Lee, Paredes, and Meyers all are minor leaguers with value. I do not follow the minor leaguers like some of you do, and there may be others. I hate to lose a big arm like Paredes, but if he is not going to be promoted, a trade likely is in his best interests and the team’s.

I know the jury is still out on Meyers, and if he hits again like he did pre-injury, he and Chas will resume their battle. If we do not acquire a LH hitting CF, the winner between them will be there, I guess, but Chas has done quite a lot to move ahead. He had some big hits (a homer off Cole!) in the postseason and The Catch. Meyers was overmatched in his one start v. Seattle.

I agree about Paredes. There are enough guys around who only need a little more time to be knocking on the door, and Paredes is ready. Also, if Whitley has any market value, I think he should be traded. Big “if” at this point though.

On Lee — I am not sold, but neither has he substantially lowered his trade value. It will be interesting to watch the brain trust.

Varsho fills every need from a team top heavy in cf, and solves the Kory Lee watch. Recall he was a reach in the second round. Make the DBacks an offer from the prospect or second line pitching corps or whatever

I’m guessing he would cost a piece from the current starting rotation at a minimum, plus a bunch more on the prospect side of things. Everything I’ve read about him is he’s a legit CF with only downside at that position being arm strength (which obviously hurts him at catching position as well). Supposedly he gets elite grades in terms of jumps on balls in the OF. If they were able to trade for him I’m guessing they would still try and make a move at catcher and plant him in CF.

Still wild to me that the run scoring environment is at a point where I’d happily trade a solid SP to bolster the lineup with a .302 OBP guy.
