The Void: 2022-23 Offseason

I used to read and post on the usenet site alt.mlb.astros. Sometime around '98 someone directed me to AstrosConnection. I kept having trouble with my password on AstrosConnection, so I didn’t get to post much but I read it often. Eventually the password issue got worked out.

I found Kev & Scott’s AstrosConnection back in 1999, shortly after I graduated from AU. I have an immutable rule to never do math in public, but the numbers don’t lie and I’ve reading/posting on these forums for half my life. Wow…

And whichever of you bastards just had to bring up the goddamn 1986 NLCS, I don’t know whether to say fuck off for making me relive nine year old me’s trauma, or thank you because now I have to drink bourbon tonight to self medicate (I really do like bourbon).

fucking Ryan throwing the ball into CF in 1980 …

I remember our emailing each other after going on AstrosConnection.com to see what was said about the previous night’s game.
Needless to say, I didn’t get a lot accomplished in those days at my desk due to this.
Not hatin’, though.

Mmmmmmm.
Bourbon.

Who was called out for leaving 3rd early on a sac fly? Heep? (In 1980.)

Found the site in 2007 and lurked for 12 years before finally posting (I took the adage “read more, post less” to absurd Monty Python levels). I took another three years off for reasons unknown.

Anyway, I’m starting to get flashbacks from the '07-'09 era where that one disgruntled poster would call everyone “neck.” I’m still not sure what that means.

I may be the only one, but I like Jake Meyers and I think he’s going to have a good year. If the Astros had to go with Jake, Chas, Tuck, and Yordan for the '23 outfield, I’d be fine with it.

1999 for me too, right after the end of the season so I had to endure an entire Void before talking about actual games.

Nimmo to the steM. 8/162

Nimmo back to the Mets 8/162

Conforto/Brantley please

Questions exist for Meyers and Brantley, and we could indulge the former for much of 2022 which might be an unrepeatable experiment in 2023

It’s not an either-or situation, but Meyers is much younger and more likely to get back on track to his potential than Brantley is to recover back to his former superb self. Meyers can also play all three outfield spots.

It often takes more than one season to fully recover from injury.

I love Brandon Nimmo, and I’m one of those “go player get paid” guys, but that is an insane contract for Brandon Nimmo.

The Mets must be printing money in a basement somewhere.

Looking at all these FA contracts makes me SO happy we already locked up Yordan.

Need Tucker too.

It’s cheaper than actually having an organization below the big league level.

I’ll admit that I haven’t seen Nimmo play much but I’m at a loss as to why he would be worth $20mm per year for 8 years. His stats do not support that number. He will be 37 at the end of his contract.

I also like Meyers. I have hope and faith that last year was a product of recovering and being rushed.

Even last season his numbers were elite defensively. His arm is below average but was in 2021 also.
