Swoop, Crane! Swoop!
These reports might be a last ditch effort to get a bump from the Astros
Hopefully Crane takes the bait.
Evidently Judge turned down 10/$400mm from the Padres. Say what you will but Judge seems somewhat loyal to turn that offer down and sign with his team.
Another bat that might fit is recently-posted Japanese slugger Masataka Yoshida. He’s 29, hits from the left side, and has a career NPB batting line of .326/.419/.538 with very low strikeout totals. He’s a LF only and most likely a DH, but that fits with having Yordan play most of the innings out there.
It might also say something about the Padres. I’m sure Judge is a loyal guy, but he may also feel the Yankees give him the best chance to keep reaching the Postseason
See also Trea Turner leaving over $40 million on the table to go to Philadelphia instead of SD. I don’t know what’s going on there, but I would speculate that when these guys are deciding where to spend the rest of their careers, they’re prioritizing organizational stability (commitment to winning being a big part of it) and clubhouse environment. I can see why players would prefer the Phillies and Yankees to the Padres on those counts.
Side note:
What were they going to do with Trea Turner and Tatis Jr defensively?
I think they were going to put Tatis in the outfield.
Tatis is almost certain to move to the OF next year
I do not care if Cabrera’d:
Nah, I think you’re the first!!
Just my opinion, but that is too much money for someone who spends as much time on the injured list as Diaz does.
Sign Gurriel for the spot or go with Hensley. We will be just fine.
That seems like a weird signing for the A’s
Maybe the As agreed to let him play full time. Sorry to see him go. His buddy Alvarez (and others) are going to miss him.
Looks like Contreras to STL is a done deal. Passan has the numbers:
He was a good Astro.
His struggles at the plate to end 2022 were profound but also an aberration.
I hope he stays healthy and softens up the AL West.
But the A’s will likely suck.
I’m betting that, regarding Contreras, the Cardinals went to the 5th year and Houston would not.
I guess Diaz is the rare person who really did get tired of all the winning.
Did he? Did Houston offer him a contract? Unless I missed it, I don’t think they did. I think they let him go. Just my opinion, but it’s hard to pay someone that kind of money when they are that injury prone. Not always his fault (HBP’s) but nevertheless, he was unavailable frequently.
Not sure it was all about the injuries. If they see Yuli in a utility role, plus they like what they saw out of Hensley, perhaps it was just time to say “thanks and best of luck”.
Past tense for me. Not the future.
