I would not trade Brown, but I’d trade Garcia, and possibly Abreu for the right return.
But now I’m confused as to what the original asking price was, as it seems to keep changing. If it’s Garcia and Abreu, I’d do it. If it’s more than that, or it involves Brown, I would not.
My preferred option is to bring back Christian Vazquez or sign Wilson Contreras in free agency and have them and Maldonado split catching duties and keep the assets mentioned in this trade. If that’s not an option, I’d rather let Lee serve as Maldonado’s backup in 2023 than pay this price for Murphy. I’m viewing Lee only as an option for the Castro/Vazquez role from last season.
He was quoted during the World Series that he was going to sign with a team where he could be the starter. That isn’t us unless we throw enough money at him to chance his mind.
I don’t expect Vazquez to sign to be a backup either, and it may mean he goes elsewhere. My thought would be to present him with a scenario where he gets 100-110 starts between catcher and rotating in at 1B/DH to give Abreu or others a day off. Then, he becomes the primary catcher in 2024 with Maldonado a free agent after this season.
What I accept is not relevant, and I do not participate in the trade scenario game. All I care about is value to a team during actual games. That is why I consider Abreu untouchable.
That anyone would for a microsecond consider an alternative to this is unfathomable to me. You don’t win the World Series and then immediately set about chasing offense by diminishing the very thing that won it for you.
