The Void: 2022-23 Offseason

Read that the Astros have engaged the A’s in trade talks for Murphy.

So far the A’s are asking for 2 of Garcia, Brown, and Bryan Abreu plus 2 other young controllable players on 40 man roster.

Sounds like zero traction so far.

I am SO pulling for Contreras. Apparently they are in agreement on the money ( AAV) but Astros want 3 yrs and he wants 5. Long way to go.

No official sources. Just reading 2nd hand unverified posts

I absolutely give up Garcia and Abreu for Murphy. I’d hate losing Abreu, he’s a stud, but you gotta give up something to get a catcher like Murphy. Not sure who else they’re talking about though, so it’s probably too big a package in total.

Unfortunately for Mr. Upton he won’t get to face them except in the unlikely event of a Subway World Series.

Actually, he will. The new balanced scheduling starts this year, every team will face the other 29 for at least one series.

I would not. We won with both pitching performance and depth last year. I don’t want to fuck with that over a catcher when we still have Matchete (done deal for at least this year) and other options on the market. Doesn’t matter what either of us think I know, but throwing my two cents out there.

This is true. I was so looking forward to the weeping and gnashing of teeth in NY. It will be extra delightful in a few years. Hopefully sooner. How do you justify the Stanton/Cole/Judge contracts - they’ve literally only added Kahnle and will continue to lose in the postseason.

Sorry. Correction.

The A’s are asking for Garcia and Brown and “other young players”

The poster then said “I don’t see how a deal is done that does not include at least Garcia, Abreu, and 2+ other young players from the 40 man roster”

I need to work on my reading comprehension.

I was talking about post-season…we know he excels in the regular season although it will be interesting to see how he fares without all the freebie wins against Halo’s/A’s/Rangers.

They’ve got some youngsters coming up who could turn out to be decent (Cabrera, Peraza), but generally they’re getting old, and they’re going to have to scramble when IKF, LeMahieu, Stanton et al inevitably break down. I look forward to watching it.

The Astros have pitched him really well over his entire career.

Regular season: 33 games, 141 PA, .200/.314/.392, 6 HR

  • With 50+ PA vs. any opponent, this is his lowest average, lowest OBP, lowest SLG, and 3rd-worst K/BB ratio

Postseason: 17 games, 73 PA, .200/.288/.415, 4 HR

Not a stretch to say that the Astros wrote the book on pitching to Judge. It’s just that no one else has been able to reproduce it.

I’m not as sure as you seem to be about making that deal, but I’d just say that if we make that deal, we need to sign Rodon. Our pitching seems deep, but I don’t think we can lose Verlander and trade Garcia and Abreu without going out and getting a front line starter.

Also, I’m not trading Brown for ANYONE!!

He appears to be, what we though Whitley was going to be.

If the Astros had to run out Framber, Javier, McCullers, Urquidy, and Brown in order to get a top-notch catcher, I’m perfectly fine with that. I’m not looking to give up anyone, but you can’t fleece everyone, every time.

If the A’s want that for Murphy, they can kick rocks. He isn’t the best catcher in baseball like J.T. Realmuto. Bring back Vazquez or sign Contreras and keep your 4th/5th starter, top pitching prospect and a big piece of your lockdown bullpen. I’d also rather give Korey Lee a real chance than give up two of those assets from the MLB roster for him.

Fuck their “wants.” Brown and Abreu should NOT be available.

I think that’s right. When you have money to spend, use it in a way that lets you keep your young talent. Especially if the young talent is part of your win-now roster.

Thanks for these stats. Over half of his games and plate appearances against the Astros have been in the postseason. That’s remarkable. No wonder the Yankees fans hate the Astros so much.

Not surprising re: the pitchers having more success than anyone else. The Astros pitching juggxrnaught has been really impressive since 2015. Postseason 2021 really was an aberration.

You have to give to get, but I don’t think Sean Murphy is worth that price with the free agent catchers available, and Korey Lee already in the organization. Also, considering McCullers’ injury history, I’m not comfortable with only having five reliable starting pitchers heading into Spring Training.

Abreu and Brown are two of the best young arms in baseball. Trading one or both to a division rival is an extremely poor idea.

I think the Astros can’t give up any pitching without replacing it.

If they were to sign a viable starter then I would be ok giving up Garcia or Urquidy but the rotation needs to stay 6 deep.

Its a fact that bullpen arms are less valuable than starters but Abreu is special. I would include him in the deal but he would need to be a major part of it that reduced the other players included

For me, Abreu is only slightly below Javier. I do not care if Murphy is a modern Bill Dickey, I would NEVER trade Brown and Abreu for him. Brown, Abreu, and Javier are untouchable in my feeble brain.
