Turner and Harper are extremely close (think Biggio Bagwell)
St.L. was willing to back up a truck for Murphy so the fact they are signing Contreras means the A’s asking price for Murphy is even higher than imagined.
I do not think they offered Diaz either.
I also think Contreras wanting 5 years caused Crane to say “No, how about 3?”
Waiting on a LH hitter. If Brantley is healthy, I hope he is the guy.
I’m worried that’s a big “if”. This is the third surgery on that shoulder, right?
Straining for a positive spin on JV,
there is almost no chance the Astros trade a young SP for a bat which they would have at least considered had JV signed, so with JV’s age and recent history there may be less of a chance the Astros end up short SP next year than had they signed JV.
A strain, admittedly.
Hardest of hardcore NYY fan, who I work with:
“Now get Benetendi and Rodon locked up and we get over the hump.”
That hump is the dead body in the middle of the street as the Astros steamroll NY each year?
Worry is your middle name. Have faith.
Reports are they are interested in Benitendi and in deep on Rodon. I was hoping the addition of Judge would slow them down.
My colleague is extremely intelligent and a lifelong watch-every-game fan. He is from an Italian working-class background and has none of the sense of entitlement of Bergen or Fairfield counties. His brothers also watch every game and they always talk about last-night games. In no way, shape or form can I have any negative feelings towards my colleague- he’s a beautiful man.
I’m not sure how well the whole ‘Click spent less than Crane wanted/could afford’ narrative is holding up after these last few days…
Could they have thought to trade him? (e.g., NYY)
There’s a fine line between “we have the money” and “don’t be stupid with the money”. Come to think of it, it’s really not that fine.
From Rosenthal’s latest: “the Astros continue to look at free agents Andrew Benintendi, Michael Brantley and Michael Conforto as options for their outfield. After losing out on Contreras, they might even explore signing two of the three.”
Abreu, after Javier, was the most dominant pitcher on the Astros down the stretch. He’s damn near untouchable in my view.
I keep thinking short term contract in OF. Out of those three Brantley and Conforto fit the bill.
If Uncle Mike is willing to return on an incentive-laden contract for 2023, I’m all for it. Elite contact hitters like him are very valuable in October against tough pitching.
According to Chandler Rome, the Astros are looking at Tucker Barnhart as a catching option in free agency.
All y’all keep talking about Korey Lee getting ready to take the job, and the Astros are out there kicking tires on every available catcher.
Biggio still has catching eligibility.
