The Void: 2022-23 Offseason

That was my initial thought as well. I could see Dusty wanting to go year by year but it’s strange that Click would only be a 1 year deal.

Dusty is one year, but no idea about Click.

Crane confirmed today he will offer Click a contract also.

I hope we go thru the exact same thing next season.

Yankees “expected” to make the $19.65MM QO to Rizzo says Heyman.

A team like the Astros (non-CBT payer and non-revenue sharing recipient) would sacrifice their 2nd round pick and $500K out of their international signing pool if they sign Rizzo.

I thought they couldn’t extend it if the player declined an option?

The only restriction on QOs is they can’t be extended twice.

Which is why the Astros won’t be able to QO JV once he declines his option.

Another article with contract projections. Again looking at the catchers, outfielders and 1B/DH types…

  • Contreras 4 yr/$74MM ($18.5MM AAV)

  • Nimmo 6 yr/$132MM ($22MM AAV)

  • Abreu 2 yr/$36MM ($18MM AAV)

  • Rizzo 2 yrs/$36MM ($18MM AAV)

  • Conforto 1 yrs/$14.5MM

  • Bell 3 yrs/$40MM ($13.3MM AAV)

  • Brantley 1 yr/$16MM

  • JD Martinez 1 yr/$10MM

  • Mitch Haniger 1 yr/$15MM

  • Kevin Kiermaier 1 yr/$9MM

Love Brantley for absolutely everything he brings to the table but I’m surprised by that number given his age next season and the history of that surgically-repaired shoulder (btw, $16MM was what he was making this past season).

Wonder if the shift ban has something to do with it.

Not that it would help HR #s.

I don’t see any way Brantley costs that much given his age and injury history.

Me either. I’d be fine with signing Brantley again but he can’t expect a contract like the last four years at $16M/year. Not only is he older, he’s coming off a second shoulder surgery. I think 2 years at $20-$24M is more realistic.

I’m really torn about Yuli. Jim is right, his defense will be missed if he doesn’t come back. I was convinced before the season even started that this was going to be his final year with us. His performance at the plate during the season I thought had solidified that in my mind. Well, his playoff resurgence has me doubting and rethinking his status. I might be willing to go one more year with him. It’s a tough call for sure. The two first baseman on the market who intrigue me are Rizzo and Bell.

Edit: Fuck Rizzo. Don’t want him.

Another area of concern is Diaz. Personally, I don’t think the Astros should resign him. We have Dubon and, while the sample size was small for sure, we also have Hensley, who I think can play every position on the infield. I save the Diaz money and allocate it elsewhere.

Fuck Rizzo, I don’t want that guy on the Astros. Do a web search on Rizzo Astros Cheating. Double fuck that guy. He is a solid ballplayer but hardly a difference maker. I’d prefer Abreu.

Your right. I forgot that about Rizzo. Fuck him. Abreu is also interesting but I thought I read somewhere that he wants to return with them??? Did I dream that?

Thoughts on Abreu, Josh Bell, or Nimmo?

I think it is going to be hard for Houston to do much until the Verlander issue is resolved. I also think they need to get something done with Tucker. Those two numbers are going to be significant on your books in my mind and will dictate what else you can do. But once that is resolved….

I want an offensive upgrade at either first base or center field. I don’t want to go into next year with those offensive issues. We were lucky that we made it thru the playoffs without the injury bug biting us hard. I like Nimmo in center field. Chaz or Jake can be the 4th outfielder along with Brantley if you resign him. If you spend money on Nimmo, you can bring back Yuli cheaper for another year. Or you could do the reverse. You could sign Bell or Abreu to play first and let Yuli go. Then let Chaz and Jake platoon center.

I like all 3, and as I posted above, I’d like to see them sign one of those three and improve offensively at either center or first.
