MLB Looking Into Potential CBA Violations By Multiple Teams Regarding Top Free Agents
Per and article from MLB trade rumors. Looking at Yankees and Mets regarding Judge but Astros, specifically Crane and his comments regarding Verlander and his expected pay, are also mentioned.
The stuff about Cohen might warrant some scrutiny but there’s absolutely nothing wrong with what Crane said there. “JV’s looking at the comps,” wow, how horrible.
The part of Crane’s comments I wondered about was what he said about Brantley and his recovery timeline—no idea what the rules are re: free agent medicals.
I thought it was kind of ridiculous myself. Nothing that hasn’t already been said in the media but I also understand that different rules apply to the owners and players than the media. Having said that, still probably not smart by Crane. I don’t see many owners talking about contracts and prices in public. He should probably just stick to the generic line, “discussions are ongoing.”
I’m torn on JV. You would hope he’s not just chasing dollars but I hope Crane reminds him we just paid him $91 million over the last 3 years for 1 year of production. I get it, injuries happen but if he’s serious about milestones like 300 wins we are arguably the best option for him to achieve that goal (especially with a rotation that provides plenty of rest to not tax that surgically repaired elbow).
If he IS chasing dollars, especially going to one of the big 3, then he is persona non grata and I hope we light him up like a fucking Christmas tree every time we face him.
That’s super disappointing considering the amount of research and due diligence he did prior to joining us in '17 (the Dallas Keuchel phone call as the final data point he needed to feel comfortable).
Speaking of which, if he gets on the phone with one of the mercenaries for the Yankees or Dodgers, I wonder if he’ll get the same kind of love Dallas gave us, or more likely, just trash talking our team and why he should he leave. I wonder how persuasive that argument would be? Something tells me it would ring hollow.
Knowing all that and he still decides to just go for the fattest contract…smh.
Justin Verlander has my eternal support. He gets to do what he likes in baseball. I hope it is with the Astros. I would understand why Crane would not want to give him a three year contract, but I also would understand Verlander going to another team if the deal makes sense for him and his family. He’s going to make a good team better wherever he goes.
I could understand him going back to Detroit to finish his career but I’ll be extremely disappointed in Verlander if he gets greedy chooses NY or LA money over coming back to Houston. I do think Crane needs to step up and offer a 2 year deal with a 3rd year option.
