The Void: 2022-23 Offseason

I don’t have any idea what the hell this means but that’s certainly not about to keep me from using it.

Crazier than a run-over dog was often uttered by a college buddy of mine.

My dad would say Crazier than a peach orchard boar

Uglier than homemade soap

My coach’s instruction for speed was “run like you stole something”. I later found out it was also his instruction to a golf ball after a low hit drive.

My grandmother’s was “uglier than a mud fence”. Only “uglier’n” was one word.

My dad used that alot. Consequently I use that now-n-then even though I have never, to my recollection, seen a mud fence.

You’ve lived a sheltered life.

Uglier than homemade sin.

Just not a shelter built of mud.

A “mud fence” isn’t a fence made from mud, it’s a fence used to keep mud in place, as in to keep it from flowing it out of the hog wallow into the vegetable patch, or across the road. But I suppose you could build a fence, or a house, out of mud.

That one fell out of an Ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down.

The homemade soap one came from my grandmother too. I assumed she had experience making it.

Yes, it’s called adobe and has been used for millennia in the Southwestern United States.

In a sense, all bricks or concrete are mud.

Crazier than a shithouse rat

Most of y’all probably read this:

Houston Astros manager Dusty Baker would have liked the franchise to add a veteran starting pitcher in the offseason but said it wasn’t possible since an important front-office member was missing.

“Well, you’ve got to ask the powers that be,” Baker replied when asked if the team thought of bringing another experienced hurler into the rotation, according to KHOU 11’s Jason Bristol.

“I’ve got power, but I don’t have authority. That was always a consideration for me … at the time, we didn’t have a general manager in place in order to make that move.”

Although I agree with his comments about wanting another pitcher, and I said the same thing here several times, perhaps Dusty should have kept these thoughts to himself. He knew Crane and the Assistant GMs were handling roster construction before Crane hired Brown. Did he go in and try to convince Crane to go after a pitcher?

So ugly the tide wouldn’t take 'em out.

So ugly … could scare a hungry bulldog away from the back of a meat truck.

Hmm.

Hope that doesn’t bite us.
