The judge had said he would not allow Trump to make âa campaignâ speech, or to attack the judge, his staff, or Attorney General Letitia James, whose business fraud lawsuit is the basis of the trial.
I saw legal pundits comment that this would have been fraught with peril for Trump. Should he veer outside the lane of closing argument and into the area of testimony, the judge could order him to take the stand so as to be subject to cross-examination. He doesnât get to testify without the other side getting to question him.
Of course, now heâs going to claim that he was banned from speaking in his own defense, despite having waved the right to testify during that part of the trial.
