Science & Engineering Shit

Of of the great things about having a dog is you get to quickly realize your position in the family pecking order.

We have two rescues. There’s absolutely no question it’s their world. Kara and I just pay rent.

I got a blind kitty. He’s real good at getting right up in my face demanding it’s time to wake up and feed him breakfast. He starts meowing incessantly if i hadn’t fed him his supper by 7PM. His hearing and spatial awareness are quite phenomenal, he will chase down a treat rolled across the kitchen floor 15 feet away. He goes out in the back yard and sometimes catches a lizard or a mole. And he takes absolutely no shit from the crazy ass dog. Can’t see a fucking thing.

We’re the underground railroad for cats. They show up, we make a half-hearted attempt to find them a home and then they’re quietly folded into the household. I wouldn’t necessarily say we are crazy cat people. More like pushovers who enjoy cats.

I firmly put my foot down on this. …sez the guy that has a house/yard with 3 rescue cats, 2 rescue bunnies, 3 turkeys and a bunch of chickens. And has had ferrets, goats, guinea pigs, pot bellied pigs, guinea fowl, dogs, snakes, fish, hedgehogs, etc… and has fostered chipmunks, opossums, raccoons and a feisty groundhog for the local wildlife rehab center.

At one time we were up to 9 cats after our next door neighbor passed and we took in her 3. Down to 5 now after we sadly lost 2 of our oldest within a few months of each other. We’re gonna try and keep it to 5 or less moving forward.

5 or fewer. Your punishment is another cat.

We’re holding steady at 3. Only one is insane.

Agreed. Always have at least 2.
In the last 25 years or so we’ve homed/fostered about 15 cats (not at the same time). We’re down to 4 now, and unfortunately our oldest is on what we’re calling hospice care. He’s 15 and has some sort of polyp behind his ear that for some reason is making it difficult for him to breathe sometimes. He has a steroid and some other meds to help him.
Our remaining 3 are rescues, the youngest two are brother and sister (Frank and Molly) and they’re 6 and our other one is Lola Ladybug and she’s about 9 and she and the other cats are sworn enemies, like Sawx/Yanks enemies.
Lola also has allergies and snots on my monitor regularly.

Widely believed to be part of a lost verse by The Kinks.

Mine are both rescues too. In fact Ivan was scheduled for termination for having bitten a handler, which seemed to be more on the handler who grabbed him wrong while he - Ivan - was recovering from his nadulectemy. He is the sweetest, most affectionate cat I have ever had.

The girl, Lily, is named after Lily Allen for good reason. She had been tagged by someone else at the shelter but for some reason that adoption wasn’t completed so we bagged her. She is the least bother of any cat I have ever had.

They’re both 12 and, snot production aside, are in excellent health. I know I can lose them anywhere from tomorrow to 10 years’ time, so I enjoy them while they’re here and put up with way too much of Ivan’s crazy shit.

They’re interesting, frustrating, weird, magical creatures.

Ugh. Three. We had to say goodbye to one of ours this morning. Eighteen years old, high maintenance as it gets, but the sweetest creature who has ever walked the earth.

Sorry to hear that. I know that’s always a tough day.

So sorry man.

Not a cat person, but that’s terrible news regardless. So sorry.

We have a bunch of meds left over from taking care of our recently departed one, including a few we just had refilled earlier this week. Let me know if you could use any of these for your hospice kitty:

Prednisolone (oral liquid) (steroid)
Amlodipine (oral liquid) (blood pressure)
Maropitant/Cerenia (oral liquid and chewables) (nausea)
Mirtazapine/Mirataz (capsules and ointment) (appetite stimulant)
Varenzin (oral liquid) (CKD-related anemia)
Adequan (injection) (arthritis)

Open offer to anybody else here if Sid doesn’t need any, I’ll ship them free of charge. If I can’t find a taker I’ll see if I can donate to a shelter or someone around Houston who takes care of cats (speaking of which, if anyone knows anyone around Houston who’ll accept unused meds, let me know!).

…to tie this back to the thread, uh, we’re going to do some science and engineering on cats.

Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be a close enough living genetic relative for the CRISPR madmen in Dallas to make mutant sabretooth cats.

@moriarty, that’s a kingly offer and I thank you but we have the meds we need for our Tom. Thank you so much, you’re a real credit to this site, cat people in general and human beings overall. I hope the meds find a good home.

ETA, I’m very sorry for your loss. We lost one of ours last year that lived with us for 16 years, and now we have another heading in that direction. You have our love and support, we understand how you feel.

I’d absolutely call a no-kill shelter and see what they have to say.

Losing pets sucks, sorry to hear it.
