Agreed. The frustration is understandable on a night he threw well, and he has been a standup guy when he throws poorly. Keep it in-house, though, always. He turned a great victory night into his own personal complaint, which the media always will be quick to spotlight, and I will be interested to see what he says going forward.
That’s the kind of loss that drives the folks at TealWhoopAss, or whatever they call themselves, to drink heavily. I’m sure they’re bashing their GM wondering why the fuck when they were still in the race did they trade away their best reliever only so they can give up a 2-run lead in the 9th to the division leader in September.
I wonder if Odorrizzi’s anger is in part a result of him seeing the handwriting on the playoff wall. If Grienke and Urquidy are 100%, isn’t he the odd man out? Does he make the playoff roster?
Maybe so, but I also think part of it is regret/guilt over not contributing as much as he hoped to contribute to a good team. He wanted to stay in an important game on a night he was throwing well. I understand both sides of the decision to remove him, and I hope they clear the air today.
I understand Odorizzi’s frustration, but this isn’t May and this isn’t a team trying to find itself. This is September in a pennant race, and bottom line is, Odorizzi’s history does not back up his complaint and his desire does not override the team’s need in a critical series. I hope they clear the air too. Having the red ass never benefitted the team nor the player.
The most upsetting part was when he followed up saying that he hadn’t spoken with Strom or Baker about it. Maybe that would be a better solution than bitching to reporters.
Since we already did the “in his defense…” with Bregman…In Odorizzi’s defense, he was asked a direct question and he gave a direct answer. No comment would have been better, but it’s not like he sought a reporter out to vent. He was asked and he answered, and I’m sure his frustration was still warm.
