Someone has some ‘splainin to do.
Trump’s story now is that none of those documents were classified because he declassified them by the simple act of taking them from the Oval Office. He claims he had a “standing order” that any document he took was instantly declassified, and he didn’t have to follow any protocol or tell anyone. Of course, that’s not how it works, but the GOP is seizing that and running with it “it’s all witch hunt because none of the documents were classified!”
I think this is the textbook example of arguing the alternative:
I never took the documents
None of the documents I took were classified
I declassified them when I took them.
They’re always chasing their tails. The latest version/excuse won’t work, cause the law doesn’t require that the documents are classified and normal people understand that even if he has the power to declassify military secrets, he has no business taking them away, leaving them unprotected and in his case, probably auctioning them off.
The guy is done for. It might get real ugly along the way, but he is done for.
Fun Fact: none of the statutes listed in the search warrant require the documents to be classified. For example, the “espionage act” refers to “defense documents”, not classified documents. The other statutes relate to the improper handling of government documents and obstruction.
The fact that some of these documents had the highest level of classification is as dramatic as it is irrelevant to any forthcoming indictments. The classification level of the documents, presumably, comes into play in any sentencing following conviction and, hopefully, into the decision-making over whether to charge these crimes in the first place.
The A-block from Lawrence O’Donnell’s Friday night show offers some valuable legal insight (if you can ignore the finding out-boner O’Donnell no doubt is sporting under the desk).
They wouldn’t have given them to me if they were really classified.
What, “I” took them?
Those are Barron’s boxes.
The Jan 6 commission is fizzling out and the never Trumpers needed a new event.
The DOJ subpoenaed the security tapes from Mar-a-Lago and saw that, after he was asked about the files, Trump started moving them around. And (obviously) it wasn’t Trump moving them, it would’ve been some of his unvetted - perhaps even undocumented - custodial staff.
No wonder they went and got them.
If this lot start fucking around, finding out would likely be the last thing they do.
I don’t know what level of delusion these weekend warrior cosplayers must have to think they can take on trained FBI agents. But it’s going to get more of them killed (one having already found out earlier this week).
Limey must be off of his meds today.
Riff-raff stay home.
Where else would Trump go?
Remember when Republicans tried to tell everyone that the Dobbs ruling would not impact the election?
Uvalde could have as much to do with that as Dobbs.
Very possible. They did not show the change (if any) with Moms, but I did a quick scroll down that thread and most of the responses were “I have daughters”.
If it’s just Dads creating the shift, then it’s Dobbs (because Moms already understood). If it’s also Moms, then school shootings is the more likely driver.
