It might make sense to have a Covid-19 thread of it’s own. And then wash your hands for 20 seconds.
Trump’s press availability at the CDC today was completely unhinged. In amongst all the self-serving incoherence was a nugget of pure evil: he is not letting the passengers off the latest infected cruise liner, because he doesn’t want “the numbers to go up”.
Think about that. If, as medical experts are recommending, they get the passengers off, the infected count would go up and spoil his lie that he “stopped” it.
Meanwhile, Pence continues to lie about the numbers - he says it’s less than 200 when it’s over 250. Oh, and we’re still not testing because the test kits aren’t out. I’m starting to wonder if that, too, is in an effort to stop the numbers.
Trump has said that the virus will go away in the summer. That was dismissed as just Donald being Donald. Now, though, it seems that this dangerously ignorant slice of nonsense is driving the administration’s policy. Just lie about it until it goes away.
I’m scared that I’m right here. Lying in the face of overwhelming contradictory evidence is how they have reacted to absolutely everything. Why should this be different?
As someone living in Korea, I can tell you that this approach will lead to nothing but misery. This is exactly the opposite of how the Korean government handled things and it still spread quickly. They are playing with something they don’t fully understand or they’re ignoring what it can actually do.
Ted Cruz is currently in self-quarantine, having come into contact with someone potentially infected with COVID-19 at CPAC. I appreciate him behaving in a responsible manner to the rest of the public and hope it’s a false alarm.
I also hope that others similarly exposed at that conference follow his lead.
Meanwhile, in a development potentially more frightening than the coronavirus, Trump just retweeted a meme of himself as Nero, fiddling while Rome burns.
The meme includes the phrase “nothing can stop what’s coming”.
Whaaaaat…thuuuuuuuh…fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuk?
Oh, and…now, sit down for this…now that Cruz, Rep. Paul Gosar and a dozen or so other conservatives are self-quarantined from the CPAC outbreak, Republican members of Congress are suddenly concerned about the administration’s response to the virus and want steps to be taken to protect…them.
Fuck all those people.
I’d welcome any insights into the experience in Korea. I read about how testing was much more widespread. I also sense that the spread is stopping, slowing down or minimized in Korea (but I could easily be wrong on this), but I have little idea why. Were there a lot quarantine or self distancing measures behind this slow down or something else entirely?
I’ve been wondering what the hell happened to you. It’s good to hear from you again.
Dow just waived bye-bye to 24,000 on the way down, having shed nearly 2,000 points on the day.
Apropos nothing, it was just under 21,000 when Trump took office…
The list of elected GOP officials who are self-quarantined is growing. It’s now:
-Cruz
-Gosar
-Collins
-Gaetz
Gaetz, as you may know, showed up to Congress wearing a gas mask…because this is funny, right? Then one of his constituents died and now he has been exposed.
He is finding out, along with many of his colleagues in the clown caucus, that governing is actually serious business and what you do has life and death consequences.
Meanwhile, there are reports that Trump is fretting that a journalist will deliberately catch the virus so they can give it to him. I mean, this is proper Mad King stuff.
Also meanwhile, Matt Gaetz TODAY rode with Trump in the Beast and joined him on AF1 before retreating to quarantine.
Is Dow Joan the new Hanoi Jane?
Edit - the tweet, like a similar one I saw last week, appears to be fake. Since Trump never deletes tweets, it’s safe to say that any of his tweets that look like a screenshot are probably fake.
It’s fake. The guy who created it admitted it was fake back in 2018.
Sorry about that. It’s just so easy to believe it’s true.
The cases have been dropping 100 a day the past four days so that’s good. I believe they’ve tested over 200,000 people this point and most cases and deaths were from one region in the south where the cult managed to get it and evade authorities for a week or two which pretty much derailed the good work the government had been doing. Essentially 80% of the country became recluses. Subway seats were left empty, big events cancelled, and a lot of people started working from home or flexible hours to avoid rush hour commutes. It was probably the right thing to do but the economy took a major shit because of it. The thing with this virus is that yes it isn’t super dangerous but it spreads quickly and I think the rising numbers cause panic and fear. I knew the US was going shit the bed considering who is in charge over there.
I’ve just been super busy for the past few years but I’ve been reading everything here.
From the “We Can’t Let a Crisis Go To Waste” Department… apparently Trump suggested slashing the payroll tax to 0%, maybe through the end of 2020, maybe permanently.
The payroll tax helps fund Social Security and Medicare.
Slashing or eliminating the payroll tax won’t help all those people paid hourly or working for tips who aren’t getting paid because people stop going out. They’re already paying zero tax because they’re making zero dollars.
It’s asinine, and designed to sound good to people who are unaffected (eg salaried employees; rich people).
He also called for a bailout of the hotel industry.
Meanwhile, Bernie and Biden both cancelled campaign events. At the same time, Trump announced a new rally. It’s like he’s trying to kill off his base voters who skew heavily older. He’s also proudly refusing to not shake hands or eschew other transmitting activities.
How convenient that a man that has hotels want to bail them out.
I fully support the President in his outreach activities.
