The double-switch’s degree of managerial difficulty is vastly overrated.

Maybe so. I guess it’s just hard for me to get used to a different style of baseball. Very few pitchers these days seem to actually enjoy hitting. Greinke and Bumgarner come to mind as two who really enjoy it. Having said that, it is probably time to have the DH in both leagues. Watching Alvarez hit the ball a mile several times last year helped my mentality about the DH some.

Yeah, I don’t understand the Pence deal, but perhaps that just me…

I’m at a loss of where he would play.

All over the place.

Maybe there’s a Reddick deal too?

Righty DH to spell Yordan on occasion?

Yeah, a Pence signing doesn’t make a whole lot of sense without another deal in the works.

I wonder if this is based off input from the new GM, or was it already in the works. Like others have mentioned, an offer for another OFer seems a bit odd.

The family circus Billy route.

Reddick just tweeted an Ace Ventura “all righty then” gif, so… ???

He’s as perplexed as we are.

Yordan needs to DH every day and twice on Sundays.

So, this was the GM’s first move?? or did he not get here soon enough?

It certainly can’t make him feel more secure about his job.

That doesn’t make a lot of sense if you are trying to get Tucker some more playing time. Odd move. Tucker is really doing us no good in AAA at this point. Play him or trade him for pitching.

I think this move has less to do with Tucker and everything to do with Reddick. A Pence signing can make sense whether Tucker gets a starting OF job or not.

  • If Tucker is given an everyday job and succeeds, Reddick becomes a $13 million 4th outfielder. Pence made $2 million in 2019 and outperformed Reddick in nearly every offensive category (albeit in limited time due to injury). Hard to justify keeping Reddick financially, especially given the team’s payroll crunch. Trade Reddick and sign Pence because you think Pence will provide more value.
  • If Tucker is given an everyday job and fails, Pence acquitted himself well enough last season to be considered a credible option for an everyday role. Trade Reddick and sign Pence because you think Pence will provide more value.
  • If Tucker is not given an everyday job, then they’re just dumping Reddick’s salary and hoping Pence/Straw/Tucker can combine for a decent 162 game season.

But if they’re planning to get Pence while still keeping Reddick and Brantley, that doesn’t make much sense at all.

Sound analysis.

Makes sense. I like Reddick but would love to see Tucker get a shot.
