“You fucked with the wrong hillbilly.”
The song from the intro:
Ian Noe – “If Today Doesn’t Do Me In"
Gonna have to check this artist out.
If you can make anything in Midland visually appealing you’re doing something right.
Apple has put up the first 8 minutes of Severance Season 2. It’s as freaky as you’d expect.
FREE STREAMING THIS WEEKEND (Jan 4/5)
Apple TV+ shows are mostly excellent, blessed with strong acting talent and high production values. So much so that if you want to avoid subscribing in order to finish any series, you’re going to have to plan ahead.
Longer-running shows like “For All Mankind” are well worth watching, but will take most of the weekend to get through. If you’re going to watch one time hog of a show, make it “Slow Horses” (4 seasons of 6 episodes each).
“Ted Lasso” is the other staple of the service and being only three seasons with episodes that typically run closer to 30 minutes than an hour, it’s certainly doable in a weekend with room to spare.
Other recs from me are:
- Severance - only one season to date but, after Slow Horses, probably the one most likely to have you subscribing for the next season (starting Jan 17)
- Shrinking - an excellent dramedy where Harrison Ford steals every scene
- Silo - a future dystopia that is grim enough that it seems like something the human race still might avoid (if we’re lucky)
We watched Shrinking on Apple+, s2e11 and s2e12. 5 stars!
Landman seems to be heading toward a season ending crossroads.
The timetable on this show is ludicrous but then again so are many of the characters and situations.
Nonetheless it remains fun.
A little late to the party, but we binged the second season of The Diplomat over the holidays. Really got a kick out of the ending.
It’s a soap opera, with cussing and better dialogue. Character development dominates the story lines. It’s a serial approach to story telling rather than an episodic. And it is fun.
Definitely heading that way, in the ilk of “Dallas”.
I cancelled my Paramount+ subscription after CPFC got knocked out of the tournament they were showing. I’ll finish Landman next time I re-start the subscription; I’m not too bothered about not being current on this one.
I just caught up on the last 2 episodes of Shrinking, and man, that season finale was an emotional rollercoaster.
If you’dve told me Jason Segal was going to be the driving character in a comedy drama but was mostly the straight man throughout the story, I don’t think I would’ve even believed it even for a second.
Behold the power of a successful TV show:
The simple act of using this abomination as a backdrop for a scene in the Watchmen TV series prompted a nation - or the white parts thereof, at least - to go “wait…WTF?” and now here we are.
A terrible piece of history un-erased.
Great show.
We binged “American Priveval” during the crappy weather…it’s good (not great) but generally historically accurate.
Friday is a banner day: Silo S2 ends and Severance S2 starts.
In welcome news, the entire staff of Nelson & Murdoch are back and Disney does not appear to have shied away from bone-crunching.
I’m sure it won’t be up to the bone crunch per minute pace of the Netflix series, but I was worried that Disney would impose its brand of non-damage fighting from the MCU, where fights to the death cause sweating, hair dishevelment and a bit of blood from the corner of the mouth.
Unrelated ADHD detour: there used to be an ABBA tribute band called Bjorn Again. After Erasure released an album of ABBA covers called “ABBAesque”, Bjorn Again released an album of ABBA-styled Erasure covers called “Erasurish”.
Happy Severance Day to those who celebrate. The NYT review has seen the whole season and said it will “blow your mind(s)” and is at least as good as the first season.
I saw one review that said S2 is good, but there’s not enough plot to justify a 10-episode run. Obviously I haven’t seen S2 yet, but fuck that guy.
This person asks a good question.
I was watching the penultimate episode of Silo last night, and when I finished the final episode was available (maybe it dropped at midnight Eastern?), so I went ahead and watched it, too.
Spoilers
I liked the Night of the Living Dead conclusion: you’ve made it through the worst, you’re almost home! Oops! Sorry about that.
I was too lazy to scroll through S1 episodes, but wasn’t the little ducky Pez dispenser one of George’s artifacts?
I was hoping for a MTG dig or something, but it turns out that for now, at least, Georgia only has 14 US House districts, so the Josh Hawley clone was from the “fictitious 15th”, not the “fighting 15th”.
When Apple says shows come out on Friday or whatever day, they are always available starting at 8pm central time, the day prior.
Watched the Silo finale, the last 2 episodes were fantastic. Wont say much past that until folks have a chance to watch (and I always mess up that spoiler thing.
Went ahead and watched Severance 2.1 last night as well. Loved it. Just recently completed a re-watch of S1, it had been so long I had forgotten just how damn good/weird/funny the show is.
