This year they added two, one off episodes, which is why there are 12 episodes instead of 10. The Christmas episode and the Beard episode. In that light it was fine, I’d have been upset-ish if this was one of the 10 story episodes
Ted Lasso won a bunch of emmys last night. Here’s Brett Goldstein’s short and pithy acceptance speech for his.
And here’s Hannah Waddingham’s acceptance speech for here Emmy.
So, my wife and I finally started watching Lasso last weekend. We’re thru S1 now. Funny show, good writing, good acting. I like that you have to pay close attention the whole time or you miss nuanced nuggets sprinkled throughout. My wife dislikes that although she likes the show overall.
The one thing I don’t get, though, the one thing that seems to not reconcile with the character that Lasso is is how easily he let his wife walk. It seems like a writers crutch to create an easy gag storyline for his one night stand. Maybe there will be some more depth there in future episodes.
I think the idea is that we first meet Ted as he’s taken the job at Richmond, which we find is a Hail Mary attempt to use the distance to revive his marriage after every other effort to make his wife happy has failed. Him seeing her still emotionally broken - rather than having grown fonder due to absence - sadly confirms that the only course of action is for him to let her go.
Without spoiling anything of S2, from what we’ve seen so far, this is not explored further.
I suspect this is an important caveat.
Could not disagree with this more.
Same. I feel like we’ve joined at the very end of that story, and are seeing the absolute last ditch efforts.
I think it is explored, just not directly. Lasso seems at first like the completest thing, but as you move forward you start to see he’s not. he’s a good guy, but he’s also pretty damaged, and he uses his lassoness to distance that Lasso from other people. I suspect it’s part of the plot line that Lasso’s wife couldn’t deal with the Lasso distance. That’s why in season 2 the team gets Dr. Sharon.
We did watch the first episode of S2 last night. It’s amazing how much I don’t like the Dr. Sharon character. Which, seemingly, is a source of great humor and interest to my wife, who is a clinical therapist.
Yes, Ted is clearly damaged, but I think more because from losing his father at 16 than because of his marriage. It’s not suggested, but it makes sense that he clung on to a bad situation longer than he should because he did not want his son to be impacted by a break up. It’s clearly what motivates him to be the mentor that he is.
As an aside, I think part of the reason for the “WTF?” reaction to the Coach Beard odyssey episode is that it delays the continuation of the conversation between Lasso and the Doc following the bombshell reveal at the end of the prior episode.

Rest assured, just like all characters in the show*, first appearances are deceiving.
- Danny Rojas excepted.

One led to another. Ted is terrified of losing anyone in his life.
S2E10:
I cried big ugly tears. Anyone who says this season is disappointing can shove it.
And I’m now pretty confident in my theory:
S1 was about Ted processing his relationship with his wife
S2 is about Ted’s relationship with his dad
… there’s enough breadcrumbs for me to say S3 will be about his relationship with his mom.

I cried big ugly tears.
Oh yeah? I bet not as big and ugly as me watching the McIlroy/Poulter pairing this morning.

We made it to PooGate. God I hate Brighton.
With the Palace-Brighton match coming up on Monday - and Palace with a new coach and a ton of new players - the new coach made everyone watch this episode. He said afterwards that he thinks they all understand what’s at stake now, but they really don’t.
They will, though. On Monday night when they walk out under the lights at Nelson Road Selhurst Park.
For anyone interested, it’s on NBC Sports at 2pm (CDT) on Monday. “When Eagles Dare” is still available on Amazon Prime - the “PooGate” episode being #4.
My brain is completely boggled today just thinking about this afternoon’s match.
Here’s the piece from the documentary about the playoff 2nd leg. The tie consisted of two games - one at each home stadium - with the outcome being decided on the combined score. It was 0-0 from the 1st leg at Selhurst Park, so Brighton held the home field advantage.
FYI, this comes in after all the poo-related shenanigans had been dealt with.
Man, that Gallagher kid is working hard.
I’m going to need a moment or 10…
My jaw dropped.
