Oi!
Since Under Pressure was referenced in the last Ted Lasso, I’ll put this here:
Watched the whole thing. Agree that Season 2 dips a little, but is still good. Seasons 1 & 3 are excellent.
Freddie with the why-yyyy at 1:08 is amazing.
It’s amazing how good they really were. Bowie was known for nailing tracks on the first take; just pure, natural talent.
Not famous for being a vocal specialist, here’s Debbie Harry’s isolated vocals on “Call Me”.
It just goes to show how incredibly tall and narrow is the pyramid for singers, the same as it is for athletes, and why those who compete on “The Voice” etc. hadn’t made it. Not that they aren’t very good singers, but you have to bring something extra to make a difference.
That’s what artists like Andrew Strong, despite having a great voice, had only a brief flash of a career -sparked by his appearance as an undiscovered singer in a movie - before disappearing.
That movie is one of my all-time favorites, and the music is first-rate.
I could listen to isolated tracks all day.
The main characters were all played by musicians. Probably the only one who went on to have a sustained career in music (and acting) was Maria Doyle.
I recently picked up the Blu Ray off Amazon for a steal. I’d only had the DVD version before, and the upgrade is incredible.
Still better than Yoko
Actually, this is not true. Jimmy Rabbitte’s younger sister was played by Andrea Corr.
Yep, one of those Corrs:
Based on the recommendations here, I bought The Commitments on blu-ray.
You’ll end up with a crush on Maria Doyle.
Worse things could happen to me.
Is she related to the author of the novel and screenplay?
Not that I know of.
Does not appear she is Both Irish and Doyle, but that is all.
What about Harry Doyle?
Two films? He only made two goddamn films?
The movie came out in 1991, so I’ve had a 30-year crush on Maria Doyle that shows no sign of letting up.
