General Movie Thread

Sabretooth cat fighting the one horned sasquatch looking dude is the scene from the Sinbad movies that I somewhat remember.

Jason and the Argonaughts made a big impression on young me. I have watched it many times over the years. My favorite scene was when Triton holds back the Clashing Rocks. The skeleton battle and Hydra fight were also great.

That was Clash of the Titans for me. I was a total Greek mythology dork as a kid, and when I saw that movie it seemed to match up exactly with my imagination.

Atlantis the Lost Continent was another film of the same ilk. Beasts of Burden, and a terrifying kill ray from some giant magnifying glass. Totally awesome.

I was immersed in the Big Three mythologies.

When I was a kid my brother and I spent nearly every Saturday at the Bellaire Theater’s Saturday Matinee. Often times we saw the great sword and sandals movies of the day. The Seven Voyages of Sinbad, Hercules, Jason and the Argonauts, or The Colossus of Rhodes, to name but a few. Other times it was monster movies or science fiction. The Brain That Wouldn’t Die, King Kong Vs Godzilla, Attack of the Crab Monsters, The Last Woman On Earth, and on and on.

Last week, I watched Ghostbusters for the umpteenth time. Today I learned that Louis Tully repeatedly getting himself locked out of his own apartment was more than just a joke about him being inept; it’s a meta-gag because he is the “Keymaster”.

How the fuck did I miss this for 40 fucking years?!!!

I just realized recently that the actress who played Aunt Bethany, who wrapped the cat, in Christmas Vacation is the famous voice actress Mae Questel, who did the voices for Betty Boop, Olive Oyl, Minnie Mouse, and many others.

The only reason I want to watch this movie is because Gary Oldman is in it and I want to learn Italian. The two, two reasons I want to watch this movie is because Gary Oldman’s in it, I want to learn Italian and the setting looks spectacular.

I’ll come in again…

25 films named to the National Film Registry.

Did Lucas ever cough up an original print of “Star Wars”? He tried to give them a “special” edition at first and they, rightly, weren’t having it.

I feel better about the future of our country knowing that Up In Smoke is in the National Film Registry.

The River Oaks Theatre KICKS ASS. I saw lots of movies there back in the day. Now i live near it again and enjoy it more than ever.
I love going to a random movie at an odd hour alone during the day…court finishes early, afteroon client cancels…window inexpectedly appears in schedule…movie!
River oaks has a “movie savant” program where you pay $20 monthly and then can see a movie a day…costs another two $2 to reserve a seat online, maybe free if you do it in person. Just took my wife to see "love actually " at a matinee. Then i took her to see the strange new musical “the end.”
I have tickets for “city of lost children”, “2001” “nosferatu” “the procelain war” and trying to see if i can make it to see “the thing”. At least 3 other movies coming out in the next month i might make it too if time allows.
A million years ago when i went to ut austin i could see new foreign and independant films at the dobie and see great older films at campus at the texas union and hogg auditorium. Now i can see all three plus the occassional new blockbuster at a cinema close to home. Fucking wonderful.
