Saw “Conclave” over the weekend. Ralph Fiennes puts in an extraordinary performance.

“You take that back about my c**t kids!”

I did too. Fiennes is great. The movie overall was pretty disappointing. Engaging and a fun watch, great job all around from the cast, but nowhere near as interesting or complex as some reviewers make it out to be. I saw one that said “more of an airport paperback than a theological statement” or something to that effect, and that’s right on the mark.

(Not to disparage the venerable airport paperback—I just went in expecting the movie to be something it wasn’t.)

Did they show Tom Hanks running around in the background looking for clues?

Having read the book, I knew to expect exactly that.

May have been discussed already, but the River Oaks Theatre reopened last month and has been showing a bunch of classics along with their usual assortment of new releases. In the past week we’ve caught Double Indemnity and Le Samouraï. It was a real treat to see them on the big screen—especially in a restored golden-age theater (a vibe they’ve really leaned into with the renovation).

For those in Houston, can’t recommend it strongly enough.

I just got back from my local AMC theater for a “Screen Unseen” event where they show a movie that isn’t in theaters yet for six dollars but the catch is they don’t tell you what it is beforehand . They only tell you the rating (R) and the approximate runtime (2 1/2 hours). I had an open evening and my wife didn’t want to go so I tried it out. Got to see gladiator 2 for six bucks. It was kind of fun to hear a few gasps in the theater when we figured out what it was.

Solid “C” from me. Manly men doing manly things lots of blood and guts. Original was head and shoulders better. Good opening and good third act drags in the middle. About 30 minutes too long.

Thelma is on Hulu now. Watched it this weekend and I really enjoyed it. It was nice to see an older person shown as capible in spite of things that come with aging.

Finally got to see it. It’s not that bad, but there was a better story to be told from a solid premise. Far too much Deus ex Machina and, while a lot of the callbacks to Alien(s) were fun, they did it far too much and so a lot of it was just clumsy.

The xenonorph’s gestation/growth time has always been flexible. In Alien it’s unclear how much time passes between impregnation and birth, and then birth to Big Chap. In Aliens, it all happens off screen. In this movie, it all happens in the midst of a plot countdown, and it’s about 5 minutes each.

Still the best TV guide listing of all time.

Re-watched “Full Metal Jacket” the other night (picked it up for $8 in 4k). I’d forgotten how disjointed it is, but each of the parts is fantastic.

A couple of things really stood out for me:

  • R. Lee Ermey is chiseled out of stone in this movie, and his uniform is absolutely perfect at all times; and
  • Now that I know it was filmed mostly in Essex, I can see that it was filmed mostly in Essex.

I’m pretty sure I’ve been on the base they used for “the Island”, but that’s because they all look the fucking same. Also, Essex on a Sunday morning after a Saturday night looks like it’s been bombed to fuck, so…

In the first four movies of the franchise excellent directors put personal stamps on the films that moved the increasing intimate story of ripley and the alien along bizzare and interesting paths.

The prometheus and covenant films struggle with big ideas beyond the reach of ridley scott to translate into good movies. I still appreciate and respect the attempt.

Romulus is dogshit. An unscary horror film that compusively references the ip because it cant think of anything else to do. Yeah, it is that bad–in my unhumble opinion.

On the positive side–“thief” and “the thing” and “love actually” are all playing at river oaks this month. So lucky that a great theater is back open. I wont go anywhere else (and its close).

“The Thing” is part of my growing 4K library. It should be a wake up call to Hollywood that movies made nearly half a century ago (“Star Wars” turns 48 next hear) using practical effects have held up better than movies made 5 years ago with state-of-the-art CGI.

Practical effects and miniatures for the win. Also, stop motion animation.

What was the guy’s name, Harryhousen? who did the Sinbad movies and Clash of the Titans, etc?

Rick Baker was the The Thing guy, right?

Ray Harryhausen was the stop motion king. He also did Jason and the Argonauts, which included the famous skeleton fight.
