General Movie Thread

There’s a sequel in the works, Daniel Craig is the only returning character, and he’s solving crimes in Italy or Greece or something.

Speaking of Daniel Craig and silly accents, Logan Lucky is an entertaining movie.

Glad to hear there’s a Knives Out sequel.

Good old fashioned ensemble cast whodunit.

All reports I’ve gotten on Maverick are very positive.

Knives Out was great. Logan Lucky was great. Top Gun: Maverick was great.

BTW Jennifer Connelly has aged very very well. I’ve had a 30+ year crush on her, since the first time I saw Once Upon a Time in America.

Top Gun Maverick is completely ludicrous, has no scene that you didn’t already know it was coming, and is ridiculously enjoyable. I saw it at one of the “Dolby” theaters at AMC and highly recommend that as well. The seats shook the whole movie. (And I second the Jennifer Connelly comments.)

And how can you hate Knives Out? That’s a great movie.

Knives Out is great. Modern classic, as far as I’m concerned. Maybe a little too cute at times, but that’s all I could possibly say against it.

I really liked NTTD. It’s very divisive, and I’ll be the first to say the plot is nonsensical, but I’ve never seen a Bond movie make such good use of its supporting characters.

Logan Lucky is fun too. Soderbergh basically made another Ocean’s Eleven and set it in NASCAR country. Shame it didn’t get the attention it deserved in theaters, but I think it’s done better on streaming.

No Time To Die was marginally interesting to me, mostly either just watching Ana de Armas or waiting for her next scene. Bond films are largely formulaic and trite to me.

I fell asleep during Knives Out. Even sprinkling de Armas throughout could not keep me interested. But, I don’t like murder mysteries at all. Too contrived, trying to generate the next “I never saw that coming” moment.

I watched the first 40 minutes of Top Gun last night as a (re)primer for going to see Maverick but turned it off. I like re-watching a good movie after time has passed to 1) reminisce and 2) see how things have aged. For example, I can rewatch Rogue One like every couple of years.
Elf, every year. ET or Close Encounters, every 10 years. Top Gun needed another decade or two.

I started NTTD on a plane and have no interest in seeing it thru.

“The Rocketeer” for me.

Maybe I caught it on a bad day, but I turned it off half way through. Ana de Armis is always watchable, but her character having to throw up every time she lies is just raging nonsense and an obvious, lazy, plot device. The whole thing seemed forced and contrived - like it was trying to be Murder on the Orient Express and falling way, waaaaaay short.

Also, Craig’s painful accent.

I thought Craig did OK with his accent and agreed about the puke conceit until I read that that’s a real thing.

And there’s a funny bit on one of the old Sam Miller Effectively Wilds about whether or not it could be classified as a baseball movie.

I do have a soft spot for Rian Johnson though, admittedly. He will have to do a lot of pop-up Bregmaning before I get over Brick and Looper and the Brothers Bloom.

ETA: the accents in Logan Lucky, OTOH, about ruined it for me.

I thought the accent and the puke were amusing, like much of the movie. I saw it in the theater, then watched it on an airplane. I wouldn’t not watch it again if presented. Really fun.

NTTD is the worst of the Bond movies, though I have to admit that I haven’t seen a lot of the Roger Moore movies. The best part of it is the fight scene with de Armas, which is very good, and I think that’s a key to why it’s so bad. There’s just no fun in the rest of it. None. It both tries to be realistic and is completely unbelievable. It doesn’t work.

“The Hot Spot” is the Jennifer Connelly movie that really got my blood moving.

A very diverse cross section of people I follow on social media think that TG: Maverick is a great movie.

I try to not like Tom Cruise, but he does make some good movies (haven’t seen a MI since the first one though).

I was told to see this movie in a theater or just don’t bother. It’s allegedly stupid fun.

Just booked my ticket to see it.

Regarding MI, the first one is weirdly one of the weaker ones, despite being very good.

Then you’ve seen them all.

Including MAGA types who are hyping it as patriotic and anti-woke. That alone is enough to make me not want to see it.

True. But I’m seeing high praise for it from most definitely non-MAGA types too.

Don’t forget the Navy was all-in on the making of the original - thinking it would be a great, “Merica - Fuck Yeah!” jingo-flick - while Tony Scott was busy making the gayest thing this side of “Call Me by His Name”.

Just because MAGAfolk see it as one thing, doesn’t mean that’s what it is. See also “Troopers, Starship”.

I get it. Still leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
