General Movie Thread

Hehe

Iā€™ll be in my bunk.

Going to see Dr. Strange this evening. Iā€™ve tried to avoid spoilers as much as possible but, as a YT addict, I think I know too much already just from the titles of the multitude of clips about this movie on there.

I wasnā€™t much in the mood in the end, but I wet to see Dr. Strange anyway as Iā€™d already paid for the ticket. I am glad to report that I was happily distracted by this movie. Iā€™ve liked how the personality of Strange has developed from him being a complete a-hole at the beginning, and this movie is another great vehicle for the character.

Visually, it is stunning. See it on a big screen.

Marvelā€™s clever use of the multiverse to clean up the timeline continues here. After SM: NWH adroitly tied off the numerous, rapid-fire reboots of that franchise, they use it here to bring the X-Men and the Fantastic Four into the MCU. They even use the Dark Hold, previously only seen outside of the comics in Agents of Shield.

Now that they have a character who can traverse the multiverse at will, they basically can do whatever the fuck they want with whoever the fuck they want. MCU - Star Wars crossover, anyone?

Speaking of the Fantastic Four, Krasinski and Blunt as Reed Richards and Sue Storm gives me hope that the next iteration of that franchise is not going to be a complete fuck up.

Iā€™ll have to go see this movie based solely on this trailer starting at about 1:30.

Goddamn, that looks good.

So in honor of the new Top Gun, I was watching a video of a military lawyer break down Maverickā€™s bad behavior in the original. In short, there would be no Top Gun 2 in real life because the Navy would not have put up with him, and he likely would not still be alive, as he was guilty of some very serious charges. His first stunt , saving Cougar, would have earned him an immediate court-martial, no exceptions, where at the very minimum he gets 5 years in the brig and a dishonorable discharge. Couple that with his flybys, proceeding below the hard deck, violating direct orders, not to mention his relationship with a civilian within the same command, itā€™s highly unlikely he would have avoided the death penalty. His likely sexual relationship with Iceman, would have been problematic, as well.

Surely you donā€™t want us to believe that Tom Cruise could play a closeted hotshot.

I thought the first one was kind of a stupid movie at the time because of his behavior would never have been tolerated. I still enjoyed it in spite of its implausibility. I want to see the new one, knowing full well, there will be stupid shit.

Thatā€™s a good warm-up, now do Star Wars.

At least Star Wars was set a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away. Top Gun was supposedly ā€˜Merica in 1986.

I never saw Top Gun. What I remember about the movie, though, was that it came out about the time home theater hifi became a thing, and you couldnā€™t go into a stereo shop without Top Gun on a screen.

My first cousin married one of those guys, Top Gun was a hilariously stupid awesome movie that they played on the Nimitz over, and over, and over.

ā€œDid yall ever play greased up volleyball?ā€ ā€œNah, we played soccer and football on the flight deck.ā€

And yes, they all (movie guys) would have been run out of the Navy in about 2 weeks.

If Iā€™m thinking of watching TG Maverick, No Time To Die, or Knives Out today, what does the consensus recommend?

(I say TG Maverick because ā€œMaverickā€ is a separate and completely awesome movie)

Knives Out is fun, havenā€™t seen the others. Top Gun is allegedly ludicrous fun.

I havenā€™t seen TG Maverick. I hated Knives Out. I enjoyed NTTD, but bring tissues.

What he said.

I donā€™t understand how anyone could ā€œhateā€ that movie.

Yeah, itā€™s not an all-time classic, but itā€™s enjoyable.
