How to shit yourself at a classical concert.

I watched Jaws last night before the game. I last saw it 50 years ago in a theater. It holds up fantastically well.

Everyone knows the story of how “Bruce” the mechanical shark didn’t work, which lead to the happy accident of how Spielberg worked around it. Williams’ score is obviously fantastic (it won the Oscar that year), but here’s an interesting clip about when they chose to use it and when they didn’t.

Not seeing the monster was borrowed by Ridley Scott a few years later and put to good use. In his case, it wasn’t that the Alien didn’t work - it was a man in a rubber suit after all - it was precisely because it was obviously a man in a rubber suit; too much exposure completely killed the other-worldly vibe.

When you finally see the full creature - when Ripley blows it out of the goddamnned airlock - it’s the least scary it looked the entire movie by a large margin. But at that point, you didn’t care, which is the same in Jaws when Bruce comes up onto the boat and eats Quint. It’s fake a shit but you’re already 1000% invested in the monster so the mind makes it real.

And now you have to go a re-watch Alien…and The Matrix.

I have high hopes for Noah Hawley’s Alien TV series that’s coming out sometime soon.

I have invested a decent amount of money into my Plex server and on 4K rips of movies. I also spent too much money on a 4K TV. But I am also something of a home body, so I get a huge amount of use out of all of it.

I also have Phillips Hue light strip that sticks to the back of the TV to generate a light field on the wall. It tracks the image on the screen, and lights up based on the predominant color on the edges of the image.

But there was something missing. With all of this, I was listening to the TV’s built in speakers. Certainly ok, but absolutely missing the full sound experience.

So, in for a penny, in for a pound as they say in the old country. It was time to splurge on a sound system. I did my research and landed on what I wanted all along. The Sony Bravia Theater Quad (plus subwoofer).

It is four speaker units with multiple cones including upward firing Dolby Atmos speakers. Sony claims you can place them as asymmetrically as you like and the tech will figure out the balance.

I have them placed reasonably symmetrically, but not perfectly. I ran through the set-up process and can confirm Sony wasn’t lying. The room filled with sound from in front, behind and above. What’s surprising is how good it is a creating a center speaker effect without a center speaker.

Highly recommended (if you have the money to burn).

Wireless?

Just saw it this afternoon. Couldn’t stop smiling through the whole thing.

Did you notice in the closing credits all the artworks were the real thing? “Buy Masterpieces” indeed.

Everything needs to plugged into power, but there are no speaker cables required.

The no speaker wires thing gives you great flexibility as to placement. I have the two rear speakers mounted on side walls just behind my couch. The front speakers are either side of the TV. As long as they aren’t blocked overhead, you can put them anywhere.

I have gathered up the power cables, but I need to do some proper cable management on them. The speakers themselves are very unobtrusive on the walls, but trailing cables are always ugly. The wall-mounting system is ingenious, as it holds the speakers away from the walls with some dampening in between.

Fun Fact: I measured the front speaker mounting locations at least twice before mounting and at least twice since mounting. They are perfectly aligned. But when I sit on the couch they look off by a good few inches.

You didn’t use inches for one and centimeters for the other did you?

I used my dick for both.

Nominated.

Did you measure from the ceiling down or from the floor up?

Ceiling down, obviously.

If I was measuring from the floor up I’d use my balls.

Boner on the left, non boner on the right?

Nailed it. That’s why it’s off by 3 inches.

That’s the reason I always use a tape measure and a T-Square.

Not sure it’s good for your hearing to have them that close
