Ex-Astros News 2021

Yes – I have not followed him, but it seems like the Astros should not let the opportunity to reacquire him pass by. He might (at this point) be a reclamation project, but the org has done a pretty good job of developing young pitchers.

Odd that they put him on release waiver rather than just DFA him or add him to the 60 day IL if they just wanted a 40-man spot. He’s only 23 and I know he’s had injury issues but just giving up on him seems strange.

Perez was absolutely essential to the JV trade. Is getting him back a possibility?

Certainly possible. All they would have to do is claim him and hope nobody in front of them does. No way of knowing what the current FO thinks of him but Luhnow and Co thought very highly of him

So Franklin Perez (1) will be undergoing the always problematic for a pitcher shoulder surgery (2) due to other various injuries hasn’t pitched since June 2019 and will have pitched just 27 innings over the last 4 years (3) has never pitched above hi-A ball and (4) is out of options. Thus any organization who picks him up is gonna be responsible for his medical costs without knowing whether he’ll ever return to health. Even if he does completely recover, is rust-free and pitching at a high enough level to be placed on the active major league you can’t then send him back to the minors after that without the risk of losing him because of his options situation.

Certainly wouldn’t be a complete surprise for him to sign with the Astros because of the shared history but I can certainly understand why Click might feel it wouldn’t be worth it.

If he clears waivers, which given what you said is a likely outcome, he would be signing a minor league deal so the options shouldn’t be a huge factor because you only have to worry about it if you ever add him to the 40-man. Really it’s just medical expenses, which aren’t nothing but if you think there is a chance that he could still be a major league pitcher, is worth the risk.

It fails, you cost yourself less than 100k, probably.

It partially fails, he comes back and makes the majors but is bad, you cost yourself maybe half a mil.

It succeeds, you potentially get 6 years of a big league pitcher, that was a centerpiece for Justin Verlander, for nothing.

I’d take the chance

Edit - granted it may be 3 years or more before he’s ready to a big leaguer at this point

Luhnow nearly did not do the JV deal because Perez was the cost. Holy cow.

Thank you, Doyce7, Walt_Bond, & Coach for very educational posts!

Perez cleared waivers and Detroit just announced that they signed him to a minor league contract.

If I was him I would have said fuck you unless I literally had no other options.

I would have expected the Orioles to make a run at him if no one else.

Super Jack was back in the bigs. Mariners called him up on 5/14 and was sent back down yesterday.

The Express has a guy with a worse story than that. somebody Anderson, a RHP, was called up by CWS on Aug 8, 2020, pitched that night and did poorly, DFAed on Aug 9.

4:07pm: The Mets have acquired outfielder Cameron Maybin from the Cubs, Bob Nightengale of USA Today tweets. The Cubs will receive cash in return, according to Deesha Thosar of the New York Daily News.

4:56pm: The Mets gave up a dollar for Maybin, per Joel Sherman of the New York Post. The Cubs weren’t going to prevent Maybin from getting another major league opportunity, which he should soon receive with the Mets.
