Electric Vehicles

Tonight’s Uber home is an EV. It’s been 5 minutes away for about 5 minutes; and now it’s 6 minutes away.

Fucking EVs.

Must’ve had degenerative braking.

It ran through a puddle and electrocuted the driver.

That’s shocking to hear.

Are we getting into Dark Brandon season?

“Formula E” is the electric open-wheel racing version of F1. They have a thing called “Attack Charge” where they can deliver 4kWh of charge in 30 seconds. Ignoring things like battery health, that would mean that an EV with a 70kWh battery could be recharged 0-100% in less than 10 minutes.

Obviously such a charging rate would be unsustainable for a full or even 80% charge (and requires a much more robust electrical system than domestic EVs have), but it’s a good indicator of the current state of fast charging technology and the time limitations thereof.

Tesla is the deadliest car brand in America.

According to the NYPD timeline, the UHC shooter took an e-bike from the hostel where he had stayed to lower Manhattan and he traversed 49 blocks during rush hour in 10 minutes.

I think this is something that e-bike makers could lean into.

That’s hard to believe. That’s a full block every 12 seconds, which would be a challenge even in a straight line with no other traffic. Google AI tells me that a NYC block averages 264’x900’, so even if he only traversed the short ends (and the streets he crossed were zero-width and the cross-traffic never slowed him down) he had to average 22 fps, which is 15 mph. Throw in real-world conditions and he has to average considerably better than that, which seems unlikely to me.

This may be crazy but hear me out: NYPD have no fucking clue who this guy is and so any white guy in a hoodie is included in the timeline.

Or maybe we’re looking at a “Hot Fuzz” team effort.

It’s entirely plausible. When I was in manhattan last month, I used an e-bike to get to my office in the World Trade Center and back from my hotel on Broadway via the Empire State Trail each morning and evening during rush hour and it never took more than 15 minutes. People absolutely fly on that trail. 50% are Citibikes going 20mph but the other half are modified e-bikes and hoverboards going much, much faster. It’s super efficient.

Thanks for the sanity check. That’s very interesting.

Like all good conspiracy theories, it’s malleable.

Biden-Harris Administration Announces Latest Actions under Nation’s Chemical Safety Law to Protect People from Cancer-Causing Chemicals Trichloroethylene and Perchloroethylene | US EPA

So yesterday the U.S. EPA announced a ban on two carcinogenic chemicals, trichloroethylene (TCE) and tetrachloroethylene, AKA perchloroethylene (PCE or “PERC”). The latter is most commonly known as a dry cleaning fluid. The former is a key component in manufacturing the electrical separators in batteries, both lead-acid and lithium-ion. Most manufacturers of Li-Ion have anticipated this and are planning for its phase out over the next 10 years, thinking viable alternatives are available. It’s a little more difficult for the Pb-acid batteries, but they’re working on it. Hopefully, this doesn’t stagnate battery technology.

Trying to get pollution insurance on a dry cleaners is a nightmare.

Video of the CyberTruck blowing up outside the Trump Las Vegas (it’s available online) seems to show a trunk full of fireworks letting go. No idea yet if this was deliberate or accidental.

However, the Tesla software’s reaction to the event is…odd.

It locks you in when it blows up? The driver was killed.

The article I read mentioned that the trunk was full of fireworks, filled gasoline cans, and other flammable/explosive materials that the FBI believes was set off by a detonation device controlled by the driver.

Had to be something more than just the truck blowing up. As terrible as it is, the CT is still an EV and they don’t blow up because there’s not enough volatile elements on board.
