Even if they recognize the need for another shutdown, I seriously doubt there is even one red state governor in this country that has the guts to impose one without federal support. Governors like Abbott are politically helpless to do what is necessary without being on the same page as Trump, lest their voters view them as going contrary to their Lord and Savior in the White House. Trump is either waving the white flag or doing his Iraqi Information Minister impression depending on how much indigestion his midnight snack gave him last night.
The game is over. We just donât know who has lost yet.
Abbott has finally taken a step in the right direction, closing all bars in the state and reducing restaurants to 50% capacity from 75%. No more tubing either, Sphinx.
And as I post that, Abbott announces he is closing bars and reducing restaurant capacity. Curious to see how well this is received, but I still donât think he would go back to a March/April-esque stay-at-home order.
âIf we are unable to slow the spread over the next few weeks, then we will have to re-evaluate to the extent to which businesses are open," Abbott said on Wednesday. âBecause if itâs not contained in the next couple of weeks it will be completely out of control and Texas will have to ratchet back.â
At some point if things in Texas continue to escalate, Abbott will have a decision to make: his integrity and duty to Texans v. denial and blind loyalty to Trump.
Trump not only is doing nothing but also he does not fucking care. He âthinksâ if he ignores the virus, it does not exist. One of his Right Wing radio crazies recently called masks âCOVID burkas.â Evil lives in the WH.
Truer words have never been said. I think so many Americans are going to be scarred for life by having that evil in the White House. And the scarring is both physical and mental.
We have more cases than in March/April/May with fewer restrictions. The idea that any containment is going to happen in the next two weeks is a joke. Cases will continue to skyrocket for at least the next 1-2 weeks anyway, especially since the delay between testing and results is increasing (was 3-5 days at my clinic last week, now is 7-10 days).
I know you know this, but Abbott is acting like he doesnât. Kudos for his action today, but itâs not enough, and neither is waiting two more weeks to reevaluate.
I donât expect anything beyond window dressing from Abbott. At least he acknowledges that the virus is real and people should stay home and wear masks when out. Thatâs a pathetically low bar for leadership, but far surpasses the presidential administration.
The solution is obvious, and much like the metric system and universal healthcare, plenty of other countries implemented it pretty successfully. Stay home for four weeks, use that time to build up a testing and contact tracing infrastructure, and require masks and social distancing once the stay home period ends. We already blew it once (and are continuously blowing it).
I am sick of the dumping on Biden. Think what you want, but keep it to yourself. The entire and sole goal is to rid this country of Trump, and every fucking one of us who feels that way MUST get behind Biden whole hog or die.
I am very disappointed that Biden is the nominee, but I understand why the voters selected him and I have turned the page. But one thing I didnât foresee, one thing I hadnât counted on with his being the nominee, and I think this is going to be extremely important as we progress in the cycle, is that he is an older, straight white man. Trump and his idiot followers simply cannot summon the disdain, the fury, the outrage, over someone who is more or less like they are. Old and white. Heâs not a black man with the unpardonable impertinence to think a black man can and should be president. Heâs not a woman with the unpardonable impertinence to think a woman can and should be president.
You can see how confusing this is to these freaks. When they werenât looking someone snuck up and snatched out the fulcrum of their bigotry.
Some windbag back in 2017, Michael Moore maybe, said then if the Democrats want to beat Trump in 2020 they better nominate a white man. As disheartening a notion as that is, both in terms of what it reveals about our society and tacitly agreeing with Michael Mooreâs windbag punditry, I think youâre correct.
Biden is such a bland old white centrist man that the Trump campaign canât even summon the rancor to call him a bible-torching socialist, instead trying to make the argument that his administration will be staffed by a bunch of commies. Iâm sure theyâll get there eventually, but the fact that theyâre not already there is pretty revealing.
