The South is in bad shape.
It’s almost as if there are consequences to poor decision-making.
Speaking of poor decision making…
Is that Covid-19 or Trump 2016 % by precinct?
Meanwhile back at the plague:
Arizona is exploding in case numbers. They’ve logged in an at least 7.5% increase on the day with 3246 so far today. Florida is also exploding with yet another daily record following the one made two days ago.
Y’all already know the situation in Harris County and Texas is getting worse at an accelerating rate. Here on the Left Coast, California’s case number have been rising at a steady rate for months, however, daily fatalities have remained even to slight decrease. A few months ago California’s testing was as bad as Texas’. Now, California is nearly up to the national average while Texas remains nearer the back of the pack. That means it is at least possible that some of California’s increase is due to testing. Hospitalizations continue their steady rise in Orange County but the case load profile has shifted somewhat. L.A. County no longer accounts for more than half of the state’s cases ans they have slowed their daily case load but other Southern California counties such as Riverside and San Bernadino have started increasing. California’s numbers are a bit perplexing.
The Carolinas and Alabama are heating up as Mississippi cools down a little. Oklahoma has had a low level of infection until recently, but as has been discussed, is in the early stages of an exponential ass reaming.
I think we can put the idea of seasonality to bed. Also, there’s new data that strongly suggests that people with asymptomatic or mild symptoms will likely experience significant lung damage anyway. Fuck this fucking virus.
Eight Phillies (of the baseball kind) tested positive at their Florida training facility.
I take it that’s recent?
It’s not just the Phillies, either:
Also, 13 UT football players have tested positive and 10 others are asymptomatic and in self-isolation due to contract tracing.
My niece is getting married in England next May. At this point, I am not sure I will be able to go because people from the US are going to be quarantined by the rest of the world before they let our pox-ridden asses go anywhere.
Click said there was one Astro at West Palm Beach that tested positive. What a mess.
The folks that think football is going to start on time are dreaming. Basketball has a chance, because the retinues are (relatively speaking) small. Baseball and especially football simply involve too many people for problems not to crop up.
In a bit of good news, Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo today issued an executive order mandating businesses require customers to wear masks starting Monday.
+1 excellent use of “retinue”
Football* has started. Come on you Palace!

In a sad aside, Crystal Palace’s world famous mascot has passed away from a heart attack at age 26. I don’t mean Pete the Eagle, I mean the bold, glorious, majestic bald eagle Kayla - rescued from euthanasia in Canada - who owned the skies in Selhurst Park for the last decade.
Like a duck to water, she took to the unnatural and hostile environment of a sports stadium, relishing her appearances there, making it her own and being just the coolest thing at any sports stadium in the world. She would soar over the crowd at will, dive low over the field, perch on the goalposts and exude poise and class; even under the most trying of circumstances.
RIP Kayla
And as the announcers were delighted to point out, Brighton has their first win of the decade.
I wished the streak would’ve continued for the whole decade. Both Brighton and Watford benefiting from last-gasp goals is messing with my calm.
I haven’t looked at the table. Is Palace in the danger zone?
No. But a bizarre run of results - something entirely likely as teams play out pre-season friendlies that actually have points attached - and we could be. Need probably just one more win to be safe.
Conversely, it’s entirely possible that we could qualify for Europe. We are only 7 points behind Moan Utd having played one game fewer (that’s later today at Bournemouth). A win today will have us leapfrog Arsenal into a tie with Spurs.
Six Trump campaign staffers in Tulsa test positive for coronavirus
Six members of the Trump campaign’s advance team in Tulsa ahead of Saturday’s rally have tested positive for coronavirus, NBC News is reporting.
Tim Murtaugh, communications director for the Trump campaign, said the six staffers were a small fraction of the hundreds of tested performed and “quarantine procedures were immediately implemented”.
“No Covid-positive staffers or anyone in immediate contact will be at today’s rally or near attendees or elected officials,” Murtaugh said in a statement. “As previously announced, all rally attendees are given temperature checks before going through security, at which point they are given wristbands, facemasks and hand sanitizer.”
