COVID-19

So now the stores and businesses have to wear masks? I’m all about preventing the spread, but isn’t this going a little far?

In Montgomery, where we are hopefully seeing the back end of a spike that took us past all the other big counties in Alabama, our mayor basically made a threat to the bigger businesses. We let you open back up, if we don’t get a handle on things, we might have to shut you back down. Please require mask in your stores. I don’t think it has had much impact.

In what meaningful way is this different from requiring individuals to wear masks? What a jerk.

He’s trying to tap dance around the issue so as not to attract the Twittire of the Mad King.

Pure duplicity. Didn’t realize we were being governed by the riddler.

Yeah, Abbott is a real POS. I’ve always thought that he was worse than Perry, which was a pretty fucking low bar. His biggest fault, IMO, is that his pandering to the mean and ignorant has no bounds, and was his only go-to tactic.

However, this is a positive development as he Is tacitly admitting that there’s a crisis brewing.

Richards to Bush to Perry to Abbott…and probably to Patrick…is a descent through the levels of hell.

This is damning with the faintest of praise.

I think businesses all along have had the power to require masks while folks are at their place of business, and several Austin businesses have had that mandatory requirement when they reopened. Abbott’s pronouncement yesterday will make it easier for timid business owners to adopt that requirement.

Abbott is a Trump lackey. No one should expect more from him, even when the crisis is worsening.

“One of the problems we face in the United States is that unfortunately, there is a combination of an anti-science bias that people are — for reasons that sometimes are, you know, inconceivable and not understandable — they just don’t believe science and they don’t believe authority,” Fauci said in an episode of the US Department of Health and Human Services’ podcast “Learning Curve” on Wednesday.

“So when they see someone up in the White House, which has an air of authority to it, who’s talking about science, that there are some people who just don’t believe that – and that’s unfortunate because, you know, science is truth,” said Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

The US has successfully reversed the flattening of its curve. I believe this is unique in the world.

Man, that damn science is ruining all the fun myths.

Gov. Newsome has now made masks mandatory in California. With the way cases are rising in Southern California the choice is masks or shutdown.

County officials across the state have been harassed and threatened by Trump supporters that think wearing a mask is only done to make Dear Leader look bad. Newsome’s move hopefully takes some of the heat off of them.

The Trump WH has it figured out: ignore science, and when confronted by insurmountable facts, wish them away.

Today we’re back to “the virus is fading away” and “the numbers are very small now”. So, presumably all those people clogging the emergency rooms and ICUs are actors paid by George Soros.

This is reprehensible: Nebraska governor threatens to withhold federal COVID-19 funds if local officIals force people to wear masks in public buildings.

Another one of Trump’s evil deeds: he politicized a basic public health necessity. True Believers emulate his stupidity and refuse to wear masks to demonstrate their loyalty to Der Fuhrer.

It’s paywalled, but Gilbert Garcia has a good article about Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff’s adroit diplomacy re: mask requirements.

After months of effort and lots of unnecessary deaths, finally we can require masks. Abbot is acting like a 3rd-world warlord trying to block NGOs from feeding his starving people.
