College Hoops 2021

I agree, 'Horns stay a #5. A loss to TCU isn’t a “bad” enough loss to move the needle much.

Maybe not bad enough from the seeding standpoint, but it was a terrible loss from a coach’s or a fan’s perspective. Beard was as angry as I have seen him in a post-game, and I do not blame him. No one like to lose, certainly, but the Texas team yesterday gave that game away without appearing to care very much. The lack of intensity and focus is inexcusable to a coach.

Contrast that with what the Aggies showed today against Auburn. That’s like a team of Tasmanian Devils.

This far in the SEC tourney the lower seed has one 5 of 7 games.

Kansas dispatches TCU 75-62 and Texas Tech took an 11 point halftime lead and held on by their fingernails in the second half to beat Oklahoma 56-55. The loss could keep the Sooners out of the tournament, but they might still get in.

Tomorrow Kansas vs Texas Tech for the Big XII Tournament Championship. Kansas is destined for a #1 seed in the Tournament regardless of the outcome, but Tech could advance from a #3 to a #2 seed with a win.

Arizona and Kansas both did what was expected and won their conference tournaments. Both will be number 1 seeds in the NCAA Championship Tournament. VaTech won in the ACC and Villanova won in the Big East. Today it will be Tenn vs Tex A&M for the SEC’s tourney title, Iowa vs Purdue for the B10’s, and UH vs Memphis for the AAC’s.

A&M and VaTech have stolen 2 at-large berths, curious to see who gets left out.

Tech played a great game yesterday until the last 5 minutes.

Tough draw for UT. Virginia tech in first round, then presumably Purdue if they survive that.

Last Sunday against Memphis, the Cougars played like a team that had already won its conference. Today against Memphis, they played like a team that wanted to win their conference tourney.

Happens to teams every year but SMU got the shaft (looking at you, Rutgers & Michigan).

VT’s a great shooting team with a very good defense that has been terribly inconsistent. Coin flip game for me, no idea which team (for either) shows up.

SMU had a shameful non-conference schedule and has a non-existent fan base. A deadly combination when it is tournament time.

Oh, look! It’s almost like losing a game you led by 20 at one point has consequences.

Shocking.

LOL, Texas. So much for that 5-seed. And then you get the red-hot ACC tourney champs in the first round.

I think VT over Texas will be a trendy upset pick, but maybe the Horns can avoid the eight minute stretch with zero FGs and 2-3 FTs that seems inevitable each game. At this point I’d be pretty happy with getting out of the first round for the first time in 8 years.

Including a cheating rudderless LSU and excluding Texas A&M is a minor travesty of justice.

B10 with 9 teams in the tourney, including sub-.500 in conference play Indiana. I’ve always felt that if you have a losing record in conference play and don’t win your conference tournament, you have absolutely no business being in the NCAA Tournament, None. Zero. Zilch. Screw the committee for allowing such an inappropriate inclusion. We don’t all get a trophy.

While I’m at it, screw the committee for matching up Texas Southern against Texas A&M Corpus Christi in the play-in games. Auto bids shouldn’t have to play themselves into the first round anyway.

Upsets abound on day one. An 11 over 6 and two 12s over 5 but the big one so far is #2 seed Kentucky goes down to the 15 seeded peacocks of Saint Peters.
