College FB Conference Realignment (here we go again)

As they have not left the conference, do UT and OU vote on their replacements? That seems awkward.

Honey, I know you’re leaving me for another man who is better looking and has more money, but before you go, can you give me a yes/no on this other gal I’d like to ask out?

Whatever you want, dear, is ok with me.

And may I leave now?

I think the answer is “yes” but the % who have to vote yes is less than 80%, so it’s moot. That’s my understanding at least.

As to Holgerson, I was dead wrong about him. I thought he’d be a solid hire, but that team continues to find ways to play poorly and lose.

Surely UT and OU would simply vote “yes” or abstain. They wouldn’t be complete dickheads just because they legally can…would they?

I would expect them to do whatever will get them on the move fastest. It seems like that would be getting the new members into the Big 12 as quickly as possible, but maybe there’s more to it than meets my eye.

Well, my understanding is that the TV revenue is set, so voting yes just means dividing it by 14 instead of 10 (depending on the timing of everything of course). From the remaining 8’s perspective, they might be able to handle a reduced share, knowing it ensures their long term situation and because they might get some buyout money from Texas and OU. From Texas and OU’s perspective, voting yes only makes sense if it gets them out of the conference sooner, or with a reduced buyout. Abstaining does seem like the play here.

The plan isn’t to add those four schools before OU and UT leave, is it?

It seems to be. One speculation is that the reduced share plus ESPN pressure will cause OUUT to pay up big to leave early. This would, of course, mean the Irate 8 take a hit too if it doesn’t work.

There is no announced plan yet, but 3 of those schools have to give 18 months notice, and UT and OU theoretically have to stay until 2025.

They’re gonna take a hit no matter what. People aren’t gonna pay to watch UH vs BYU, not even like they would UT vs Southwest Hill Valley State. The Big XII is fucked without UT and OU. Everyone knows it.

Of course they are. It’s just a matter of degree at this point. Probably the best they could do in the situation.

Big XII MAY be fucked, but not necessarily with the playoff system expanding. Big XII may get an automatic bid and prove to be a viable path to a national title. Even so, they will have to do something different like Thursday games to get enough TV.

Big XII schools are in a very tough spot because of OUT, but I think they have a chance to succeed, even though the odds are against it.

It’s also very possible that the Big XII founders and the Pac 12 and ACC follow closely behind. In a few years the college football landscape could mirror the NFL with two giant super conferences that make money and every other league that breaks even or loses money.

A viable path to the national title has to include a viable plan for recruiting the talent necessary to win a title. The reconstituted Big XII (I love the “Irate 8” name) won’t have the cachet to do that. It’s not like basketball where you can get lucky on a single recruiting class.

Not only that, basketball has an actual National Championship that’s open to all schools at that level. It doesn’t matter your conference, win and you have a opportunity. It’s settled on the court, not in a smoke-filled room. That said…yeah, the new and unimproved Big XII will cease to be a major player in football

Fun day of CFB so far, hope it stays that way tonight.

How many miracle escapes does Notre Dame have in them?

Wow, bummer. I paid zero attention to that game, guess I need to watch highlights later.

Pac12 is better than people thought this year, so far, and Iowa State is a total disappointment.

And now the Aggies pull one out at the end. Both of those games were the worst case scenario for me: teams I dislike win but fail to cover, screwing me over twice.
