College Basketball '22-'23

I couldn’t agree more. It is infuriating. He is a brilliant basketball coach but a total idiot emotionally with
ultra shitty impulse control.

UH takes care of SMU 87-53.

He will have a hard time getting hired anywhere unless the school just does not care about image. What a damn fool.

Ohio State gives away the game against Purdue with a dreadful turnover on an in-bounds play with a 1-pt lead. Purdue calls timeout, runs a play that gets a freshman a clean look at a three that he nails. Ohio State then proceeds to do nothing in the final 7 seconds and has to throw some desperate bullshit up at the buzzer. Yuck.

He’ll go be an assistant in the NBA or coach somewhere like Eastern New Mexico University.

He’ll be back someday. If Bruce Pearl can be rehabilitated, Beard can be, too. But it will take years.

Billy Gillespie is doing well at Tarleton State.

He should be on suicide watch. No matter what actually happened that night, she said what she said after calling 911. He has nobody but himself to blame for being in that situation at all.

I don’t understand the vilification of Pearl. He lied to the NCAA about a minor violation - stupid yes -Even he says that now - but not in the same league as being arrested for domestic violence.

Hell, Kelvin Sampson has had two programs put on probation for him doing the exact same thing. He made over 500 impermissible phone calls at Oklahoma and while restricted by the NCAA from making outgoing calls to recruits he does it again at Indiana - and guess what he lied to the NCAA and IU about it. He had a longer show cause penalty (5 years) than Pearl (3 years) but no one ever says if Kelvin Sampson can get a second chance…

I don’t get the amnesia on Sampson while Pearl is vilified.

Pearl has always had his detractors among the coaching profession going all the way back to his days as an Iowa assistant and his involvement in the Deon Thomas recruiting scandal with Illinois. But I don’t think he did anything to be as vilified as some are want to do.

Well, that was my fault: I was going to mention Sampson and didn’t. In my opinion, if you can get the NCAA to issue a show-cause, you’ve really done something. That Illinois-Iowa stuff with Deon Thomas was a real mess, and Pearl was at the heart of it. And given his track record at Iowa and Tennessee and other jobs, I find it very hard to believe that he was unaware of what Chuck Person was up to.

I get being skeptical on the Person issue. He did get a small slap on the wrist - two game suspension - in 2021 after the investigation began for an investigation that began in 2017. What they got him for was lack of adequate monitoring.

The head coaches at the other schools involved (Arizona, South Carolina & Ok. State) were not suspended. So I think Pearl’s role was given great scrutiny.

Not suspended, but Sean Miller was fired by Arizona because of the FBI/NCAA investigation into the program.

That investigation was a commercial decision, focused on Adidas school at the direction of Nike and was a seminal moment in my realizing that even the FBI/DOJ are fully bought and paid for.

The recruits were promised space lasers and microchip implants

Umm Auburn isn’t an Adidas school and Chuck Person plead guilty to accepting over $91,000 in bribes from a financial advisor.

Arizona and Oklahoma State are Nike Schools.

Facts always get in the way.

My boss, the inimitable Dr. Larry Turley, would tell you to never let facts get in the way of a good story.

Big XII basketball continues to be great as Iowa State beats TCU 69-67 on a last second three pointer. TCU came back from a game long deficit to take the lead but Iowa State got it back inside of two seconds and held on to win.

Best basketball league in the country.
