College Baseball 2021

Oklahoma State eliminates Texas 5-4 and will play in the championship game tomorrow against the winner of the upcoming TCU vs Kansas State game.

To clarify: Both Texas and Kansas State were given an unearned advantage yesterday because there was a rain delay after they played their games, and they lost their games earlier than Texas Tech or West Virginia. All of the teams had a 1-1 record going into that game.

In the case of Texas Tech vs Kansas State, the edge given Kansas State was not decisive as they beat Tech soundly in every aspect. I have no doubt that Kansas State would have won that game even if circumstances were reversed. The advantage given Texas, however, in such a close game was probably decisive and West Virginia would have most likely won if circumstances were reversed.

In any case, Texas doesn’t need Big XII tournament success to secure a top 8 seed in the NCAA, their resume this year was already well established. Texas Tech may regret their poor performance and will have to see if they can hold on to a top 8 seed.

I’m pulling for Kansas State to beat TCU and OSU and secure the automatic bid. It would be a nice cap to a season that saw the program improve significantly. It would also give the Big XII at minimum five bids as UT, TTU, TCU, and OSU are already in. There is still a chance OU or BU may give the conference another entrant.

Just a guess on my part but I suspect if K-State does secure that automatic bid then the chances of OU or BU getting in are pretty much zero.

UT walked in the winning run today. Probably because the coach did not care.

TCU crushes Kansas State 17-7 as the clock strikes midnight for the Wildcats. TCU scored a bunch of runs in the first inning and another bunch in the eighth as K. State just ran out of pitching.

Tomorrow, TCU vs Oklahoma State for the tournament championship. A win for TCU would help their case for a top 8 seed in the NCAA.

You’re probably right, but with K. State’s loss a moot point. Baylor may have an outside shot, I don’t think either of the other two will get in, but I hope I’m wrong.

TCU beats Oklahoma State 10-7 to win the 2021 Big XII Tournament.

TCU had struggled at the close of the regular season but seems to have righted the ship and may have secured a top 8 seed in the NCAA. They will certainly host a regional along with Texas and Texas Tech.

On to the Big dance for at least four Big XII teams, will there be a fifth?

The NCAA field is set, and as expected, there are surprises.

The good news for the Big XII is they secured three of the top eight seeds with Texas a #2 seed, TCU a #6, and Texas Tech a #8. Only the SEC has more with four (#1 Arkansas, #3 Tennessee, #4 Vanderbilt, and #7 Mississippi State) . The other national seed went to the Pac 12 (#5 Arizona).

The bad news is the Big XII put only four teams in overall. Baylor, Oklahoma, and Kansas State are all better than teams that made the field, but worthy teams are always left out. I had hoped for one more.

Oklahoma State is the only Big XII team not hosting their regional and will be hosted by Arizona along with U.C. Santa Barbara and Grand Canyon. I like Oklahoma State.

Texas will host Southern University, Fairfield University, and Arizona State. Anything can happen, but the Longhorns should have no difficulty advancing to the Super Regionals.

TCU will host McNeese, Dallas Baptist, and Oregon State. They should win this regional but DBU is a well coached team that exploits opponent’s mistakes and Oregon State could get hot. I feel good about TCU’s chances, but not as confident as I am about OSU or UT.

Texas Tech will host a Regional for the fifth consecutive time, indicative of the solid program Coach Tim Tadlock has built in Lubbock. The Red Raiders host Army, UCLA, and North Carolina. Tech should be able to get by these teams, but this year, if they don’t score early, they don’t win so I hope they’ve scouted the pitching well. Hopefully they’ll get a lot of innings from their starters and not have to depend on a sometimes unreliable bullpen. I pick Tech to win this regional, but there’s probably some homerism; if they do, it won’t be easy.

The NCAA Tournament action begins tomorrow. Here are the scheduled games for the four Big XII teams:

Texas Tech vs Army at 9:00 AM PDST, 11:00 AM CDST in Lubbock, Texas
Texas vs Southern at 11:00 AM PDST, 1:00 PM CDST in Austin, Texas
Oklahoma State vs Univ. of CA, Santa Barbara at 1:00 PM PDST, 3:00 PM CDST in Tucson, Arizona
TCU vs McNeese at 4:00 PM PDST, 6:00 PM CDST in Fort Worth, Texas

None of the Regionals with Big XII teams are paired for Super Regionals, so it is at least possible that all four make it to the College World Series in Omaha.

Texas Tech beats a pretty good Army team 6-3.
They will play the winner of the UCLA vs North Carolina game played at 6:00 PM CDT.

Texas wins against Southern University 11-0. The game was actually closer than the score, but not by much. Southern didn’t play poorly, Texas is just so much better.

Texas plays the winner of the Fairfield vs Arizona State game.

… What?

It was 7-0 in the 4th inning, and Southern had 4 total hits…

To be fair, 7-0 is closer than 11-0.

I think a 8-0 or 9-0 score would be more indicative of the game. Which is closer, but not by much.

Southern is the kind of tomato can team you get to play if you earn the #2 national seed. I thought they played some good defense and pitched a few good innings. They weren’t intimidated by Texas, even if they were obviously outclassed.

But how many tortillas could be winged around the field?

Oklahoma State got absolutely worked by the UCSB Gauchos 14-4. They will play the loser of the Arizona vs Grand Canyon game.

You are such a fucking ā€œGuns Upā€ homer. Let someone who does not care post the scores. Texas should have won by 20 with all the base runners it had. Closer? You are nuts.

Don’t bust your pick mining for grievances.

Jesus fucking Christ…calm your tits Jim.

I hate the Sand Aggies as much as any other Longhorn, but fuck.

WFW. Watch the game, and STFU.

Duly noted.

Tennessee down 3 to Wright State in the 9th, gets a walk off grand slam.
