I guess it’s happened but I don’t recall Texas playing any solo, midweek games against conference foes. There are always enough directional schools to fill those midweek games.
Speaking of which, Texas finishes off the Bobcats 4-1 heading into the big series with the Froggies this weekend.
It happens regularly in the PAC-12, at least wrt to the UofA. They play that school up north (a.k.a. Tempe Normal) in non-conference mid-week games twice a season.
Was looking forward to the Rice-Texas game on LHN today as a lead-in to the Stros tonight, I’m assuming that’s totally cancelled.
Anyone in the know what’s up with the Rice program the past few years? I was a regular at their games 15-20ish years ago when I lived in the neighborhood, but have totally lost track.
They’ve taken a step back. I’ve got to imagine that recruiting is difficult. I had high hopes for the new guy they hired from Tennessee Tech after their dynamite performance in the tournament a few years ago, but they haven’t come to pass.
With Selection Monday less than 2 weeks away, the Big 12 back up to 5 teams in the tourney per the latest Baseball America projections (Baylor and OSU along with ofc TCU, Tech and the Horns).
The Big XII Tournament is set. The format is two four-team divisions wherein the teams play a double elimination, seeded round. The winner of each division play a single championship game on Sunday, May 30.
UT is the #1 seed and will play the winner of Tuesday’s “play-in” game between Kansas and West Virginia starting Wednesday. #5 Oklahoma and #4 Oklahoma State make up the other pair in the division.
TCU is the #2 seed and play #7 Kansas State in the first round. #3 Texas Tech and #6 Baylor make up the other pair in the division.
Upsets have been the norm in this tournament, so there’s no real favorite in my mind. Bricktown in OKC is a great venue and it should be a lot of fun.
TCU will be looking to improve their seeding in the NCAA, at #11 now according to D1. Tech will be looking to secure or improve their #8 seed. Tadlock typically doesn’t put much into the Conference tournament, this time he’s going to want to keep that #8 so Tech can host a Super-Regional if they can win their first round so I’m hopeful for better play. This year has been a roller coaster for Tech, so who knows? Texas is #3 for the NCAA according to D1, so their place as a S-R host should be secure regardless of the outcome of the Big XII Conference tournament.
Big XII baseball is pretty damn good. With three regional hosts and, if OU makes it, six teams, or 2/3rds of the league in the tournament, it is a small, but elite, baseball conference.
Agreed. There’s some solid depth to the starting staff, but it lacks top notch guys, IMO. I also hope they bring their best defense. It’s been inconsistent, but brilliant at times.
I’m as big a fan of Big 12 baseball as the next guy but the conference is not an “elite” baseball conference. The SEC is elite (6 CWS titles in the last 15 years). The PAC 12 is elite (5 CWS titles over that period). Heck, the Big South and WAC have more CWS winners during that time.
Since 2010 the SEC has put four teams in the CWS twice and three teams four times. The Big XII have put three teams in the CWS twice in that time. No other Conference has as many as three teams in the CWS during that period.
The SEC has 14 teams and the Big XII has nine.
I’ll grant the SEC is better, but the Big XII is the second best overall conference in spite of no championship since Texas in 2005.
West Virginia beat Kansas in the “play in” game Tuesday and they will play #1 seed Texas this evening. Also, #4 Oklahoma State will play #5 Oklahoma this evening.
#3 Texas Tech just beat #6 Baylor 11-4. Tomorrow, Tech will play the winner of the #7 Kansas State vs. #2 TCU game which begins shortly. Baylor will play the loser tomorrow in an elimination game.
ESPN+ will carry many if not all of the games. ESPN regular will carry the championship and a couple of other games.
TCU comes from behind to beat Kansas State 7-6 in a walk-off. KSU and BU in an elimination showdown tomorrow as TTU and TCU try to keep the good times rolling.
