Cole and FA

7/$245MM is only $35MM/year AAV. That would put him up there with Zach Greinke money and well below Scherzer, Strasburg or Kershaw. No way that’s gonna work. I’d imagine Cole had a good laugh at that offer.

I think that Cole will get somewhere near 7/280, $40MM/AAV.

I imagine he appreciated it as an opening offer. It’s a good floor to set.

It will be interesting to see if Houston makes him any kind of offer. All of the stories that are coming out, you never see Houston’s name mentioned. It is always the Yankees, Angels, Dodgers and surprisingly the Rangers. But the media hates Houston. As much as I would hate to see him in a Yankees jersey, I would hate to see him in a Rangers jersey even more.

As a fan of the game, I’ll actually really enjoy seeing how the Astros manage their plate appearances against Cole. Should he go elsewhere. I have as much faith in the Astros hitters / plate discipline as I do really good pitchers.

One thing is that the team that gets Cole not only get a great pitcher they get first hand intelligence on all of the Astros methods. Maybe these are common knowledge amongst certain front offices, but I’m not sure that’s true of, say, the Angels.

Reclamation project like Gio Gonzalez for $3MM is better than $40MM for Cole. As long as you push 50% of the savings to the “IT” budget. :^P . (too soon?)

Strasburg just got 7 for $245m from the Nationals, for point of reference.

We are running out of alternatives.

More than $80M deferred

I don’t know anything, but I just have to feeling the Astros are not interested in those type of $$$$ or years. We shall see, but second tier or reclamation projects??

Seems kinda low. Strasburg made $38MM this past season, and now signs a 7 year deal for an AAV of less than that at $35MM? Since he just opted out of 100MM over the next four years, I guess he’s basically tacked on 145 over 3 seasons, which is a little over 48MM per. I suppose when you look at it that way, it sounds a little better…in a Dallas Keuchel kind of way. At any rate, I think this firmly sets the floor of Cole at 7/250. And if a bidding war broke out, I could see Cole easily getting 7/$315MM.

The Astros got their big money starter on July 31.

Right and with James, Urquity (sp), Mc, rookie, etc. they are pretty solid.

what about McHugh? he hasnt sign anywhere yet right? I am just thinking 3,4,5

I don’t think we know that they are solid. That’s a stretch to me.

I guess what I mean is that for a 3,4,5, there are alot of options.

Cole is a couple of years younger than Strasburg and has a better injury history, fwiw.

Also seems clear that the Yankees’ 7/245 offer for Cole, whether real or not, was floated by the Boras camp. Boras knew that Stras didn’t want to leave Washington; this established the floor for Cole.
