I guess the only saving grace is that by some miracle, we are only 4.5 back. That is nothing.
But this team just looks so bad in all facets except meaninglessly timed hits and we are counting on a 41-year old pitcher to come riding in and right the ship. If anyone could do that, it’s JV, but damn that’s a gamble. And we are hoping that all of Urquidy, Garcia and LMJ can come back and pitch like the past with no post surgery issues. Seems like the odds are stacked against us.
Just persistent. And maybe delusional? I was told while in the army that I should become a “lifer” and retire at 39. I have been committed to Plan A (which did NOT involve staying in the army) since then. I am still working. That was 50+ years ago.
Here’s the thing: even if they hadn’t signed Abreu, who the hell would have played first? The org has NOBODY at the position, or else Singleton never would have been signed. This is a bigger problem then just Abreu.
Yeah, there’s no sense second guessing the past right now, there are games to win. The immediate move for me would be to DFA Singleton and have Caratini take more starts at 1B. If a third catcher is necessary, Cesar Salazar is on the 40-man. He can’t hit a lick but he lets you get Yainer and Caratini both in the starting lineup more often. Not ideal, but it’d be an improvement imo.
My opinion on him is not popular here. Are we going to miss him if he’s not over there? Sure we are. His defense is elite at that position. But overall as a player, I don’t think he’s worth what he’s going to want. I said on here before spring training in 2023 that we should trade him. It wasn’t well received. I still feel that way now, though he’s playing so poorly you might as well wait until the deadline to see if we are out of the race and hopefully he’s playing better then.
We had Peña to replace Correa. Has worked well. We have struggled to find consistent play in center since Springer walked. I see third much like center. We have no Peña ready to take over there. That’s why I wanted to move Bregman last off season when his value was higher. You should have been able to get a much better third or first base prospect in return. It’ll be a little more difficult now because he’s going to be a rental if you move him.
Of course they may decide to pay him and render all my hand wringing moot. But I wouldn’t pay him one penny over his current $20M AAV….and I don’t think he’ll accept that.
