Baseball Miscellany

Jazz refuses to wear a cup when batting or playing the field. I find that more interesting than sucking on a lollipop.

If Manfred is even half-serious about his latest CBA proposal we can kiss the 2027 season goodbye. Maximum 5-year contracts for free agents capped at $202 million (6/$265M for teams extending “Cornerstone Players”). The proposal includes some good things (an increased league minimum, no more draft pick compensation, free agency at age 30 with 5 years’ service time) but nothing that comes close to outweighing the free agency restrictions.

If the league were in crisis I can imagine why drastic changes could become necessary, but the game is thriving. Revenue is strong. Franchise values have gone up astronomically. So naturally Manfred wants to strangle that golden goose til it’s good and dead.

The Mets, who unlike the Astros have not reversed course from their disastrous April, have fired manager Carlos Mendoza. 34-57, last place in the NL East, $365M payroll.

That should fix things.

McCullers with a pretty good outing at AAA. 3 Innings, 2 hits, 0 runs, 0 walks, 4 strike outs, 42 pitches. Blanco with 2 decent outings in AA. Cole Hertzler might have something.

Speaking of fixing things: the Angels just fired GM Perry Minasian and brought in former Cardinals GM John Mozeliak to replace him (on an interim basis, for now). Mozeliak, of course, held the reins during the Cardinals’ descent from perennial contender to whatever they are now.

Jacob Misiorowski threw a 105.5 mph fastball yesterday.

…breaking his own record for the fastest pitch recorded by a starting pitcher in the pitch tracking era (since 2008).

It’s also tied for the third-fastest pitch by any hurler, behind two from longtime reliever Aroldis Chapman (105.8 in 2010, 105.7 in 2016) and matching Ben Joyce (105.5 in 2024).

His 107th and final pitch was 102.8

eta: he was drafted 63rd in 2022, 1 pick before the Stros took Jacob Melton

Pretty annoying meltdown by the Tigers to squander a 2-0 lead in the 9th against the freaking Yankees. They’re not dead yet, but I’m not optimistic.

I am fine with the Yankees beating the crap out of every American league team that will end up right around .500. So what if the Yankees win 110 games this year? We need those other teams to be less successful for the Astros to have a chance.

NYY are on a 3-10 streak, and I’m all for it

Now down 6-2 in the 11th

I understand where you’re coming from, but the Yankees’ trajectory will put them in that group soon, too. I don’t know if that scrum will last to the end of the season, but it will be a wild finish if it does.

This is incredibly good news (per Bob Nightengale)

Hard to imagine the replacements being as awful, but when it comes to snafus MLB is capable of anything.

Pawol hasn’t graded well in her limited sample, but she’s at least better than Bucknor, and probably not such an asshole.

Set aside for a moment the foolishness of going after Skubal:

What on earth makes them think they could match another team’s offer?

Maybe the Tigers are looking for several number 5 starters or an outfielder that hits in the .200 range.

They’re not just gonna do the JV trade all over again… right?

Hmmm…

Walter Janek (Jake Rogers)
Ethan Frey (Daz Cameron)
Ethan Pecko (Franklin Perez)

Make it so.
