Baseball Miscellany

I look back fondly on the clear vision and competence of the Ed Wade era.

Who gets to play the part of Shawn ChacĂłn?

It’d have to be an underperforming pitcher who played last season in Pittsburgh. I can’t think of any parallels.

Holy shit, you nailed that one

Was anybody else watching the Cards and Cubs last night? Fog started rolling in, and by the 6th and 7th innings it was so thick you could not see the outfielders from the behind-the-plate camera; whether the outfielders could see the ball was unclear. In the 8th the infielders started complaining that even THEY were having trouble seeing the ball, so the game was suspended. I gave up and went to bed at that point, but I guess they resumed at later and the Cards won 3-0.

Good grief that sounds like terrible conditions.

I was aware that it was happening. It wasn’t too foggy where I am, just lots of lingering smoke from the fireworks.

A couple of months ago I saw an incredible marine layer off the lake that was exactly like the afternoon fog you see in San Francisco. I don’t know why it had never occurred to me that a large lake could produce the same effect, but it hadn’t and I was most surprised.

First time I can remember no Game Zone.

I started to make a thread but got distracted then it got so late I didn’t want to mess up the vibe.

The 9th was unnecessarily interesting but another good W.

Bottom of the order produced in some key spots.

I was watching and when Santa gave up the bomb, I wanted to jump into the thread and say “darn” since I like him and his sub-1.00 ERA. But then stopped myself since he was pitching exactly like he was supposed to. 3 outs to get, stay in the zone, let your defenders work, don’t issue walks, you have 3 runs to give. That bomb did not matter one bit. Nor did the hit after. He was doing his job.

Not sure I understood Espada putting in Hader there except to swoop in for the one out save. Which is fine but added to the unneccesary drama.

Espada is such a fucking busybody in the late innings.

Bryce Harper got paid by FanDuel to record a happy thanksgiving video for one of their VIP bettors, who happens to have been a VIP because he lost $1.5 million betting through their platform. I’m not going to cry over a guy who had that much money to lose in the first place, but I am absolutely sick of these companies, MLB’s cozy relationship with them, and now evidently the players’ cozy relationship with them too. Ban this shit immediately and wipe these companies off the face of the earth.

That’s just so gross. Everything about it.

Back in the early 2000’s I was living in Las Vegas (coincidentally where Bryce Harper is from). MLB was moving the Expos to the U.S. and there was a brief competition to be the new home city before they landed on Washington.

Vegas really wanted the Expos and started making a public push, but MLB immediately shat on that idea because of the association with gambling. They didn’t want even a whiff of gambling to taint the precious MLB image. Now Bryce Harper is getting side payments from FanDuel to make videos for losers.

There was a time, not all that long ago, when Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays were banned from baseball, placed on the same permanently ineligible list as Shoeless Joe Jackson and Pete Rose, for doing public relations for a casino, years after their retirement. That’s how far away from gambling MLB wanted to be. Now they can’t wait to fellate the bookmakers.

It’s Thirsty Thursday at the yard in Midland. Half price beers. Hard to beat. Come join me, and I’ll buy a cold one.

Good thing the Astros are off today. Might not be able to walk out of there if they were playing

Yep. Drinking Five Hour Drive from Tall City Brewing. It’s tasty. Especially when it’s half off. Nothing better than a ballgame and a cold beer. Well, maybe a cigar too.

Nice piece about Yordan from Chandler Rome.
