They were not good, but Posey et al are grasping at things to make it look like they’re doing something to save that floundering ship.
Their going to college for a coach to manage has not been successful at all.

Somewhat surprising:
The #Astros lead all of #MLB in batter success rate with the ABS (Automated Ball Strike) system at 59.4%. Today, Joe Espada spoke in detail about how they utilize baseball’s newest tool. “We do a lot of work behind the scenes…we have a really good process…”
I’m reading that post, and I recognize every word in it, and I know the meaning of each one, but put together in that order they make me question the reality of this existence
Think how good the rate would be if they taped Cam’s hands to his sides.
He might get a few more walks as well
Congratulations to Arrighetti, AL Pitcher of the Month for May.
Narrowly edged out Abreu.
Arrighetti tells a story about his travel league first base coach, a 15 year old Alex Bregman.
That’s wonderful. I love how pitchers have a photographic memory of every plate appearance against each hitter they’ve ever faced, and vice versa. There are retired guys who can break down pitch sequences individual at-bats from 25 years ago. It’s amazing.
Trei Cruz—grandson of Cheo, son of Cheito—is getting called up by the Tigers for his MLB debut. He’s 27, a utility guy at this point, but very cool for them to join the three generation club.
On that note, one of the top draft prospects for 2027 is Landon Hairston of Arizona State. If all goes as expected with him, in a couple years it’ll be four generations of Hairstons to have played in the majors. Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I think that’ll be the first time that’s happened (per Baseball Grandfathers, Fathers and Sons | Baseball Almanac).
In case anyone is interested, I have some words about Altuve aging:
https://michaelshopoff.substack.com/p/on-altuve-biggio-and-the-aging-curve
I wondered whether Altuve’s early patience at the plate would continue, and the answer has turned out to be: sort of. He’s still swinging at fewer pitches overall, but he’s gone back to his career average rate of chasing outside the zone - meaning the additional pitches he’s taking are in the zone. That’s a bad combination, and if I were the hitting coach, my first advice would be “get more aggressive.” (If I were the hitting coach, someone would have made a very bad decision, given that I topped out at third grade Little League.)
Nice.
Good read all around.
Thanks for this. I was just researching/ writing a blog about this for BreathingOrangeFire
I will read it and then mention the article and include the link where that subject matter applies.
Unless you would rather I didn’t?
Happy to have you reference and attribute
In baseball not news, Aaron Boone is an insufferable prick:
Boone unhappy with Chisholm for in-game lollipop: ‘Pisses me off’
U.L. Washington thinks this is bullshit
How is that different (much less worse) than dipping on the field? Or chewing gum? Seeds? Some folks need to get a life.
Too bad we can’t see Boone confront U.L. Washington
