Pathetic statements from Cherington, not that there was anything good he could say. It’s literally one game’s worth of plate appearances. You just had to get that prospect that one extra day on the roster? Don’t insult people’s intelligence.
I will say he’s right that it probably won’t hurt the Pirates’ reputation with future free agents, given that it couldn’t be any lower.
The only correct response is “while we feel this move is best for developing our team moving forward into 2025, we appreciate everything Rowdy has meant to our organization, and we will honor his performance bonus as we wish him the best moving forward in his career.”
If you haven’t seen it, the Padres also punched their Postseason ticket last night, pulling an around the horn triple play to end the bottom of the 9th:
Miguel Rojas was the batter. He’s got 8 bags on the year, and once had as many as 15 in a season. He ain’t exactly Martin Maldonado, but he wasn’t getting down the line there either. He probably never thought a triple play was on the table.
Wow. I absolutely thought that would be a fun night out for the family if the weather cooperated. But I wouldn’t have expected to pay $200 for all four of us.
I have a feeling ticket prices will be a lot lower on the actual day of the event.
The cheapest seats are about $200 with parking for a family of four. Those same seats are $16 each for tonight’s championship game, which is more in line with my original expectations.
While a triple play was studly, I like Mike Scott’s no-hitter for the clinch a tad more. I realize the clinches were for different levels of the playoffs and in different centuries.
Both the Tigers and Royals are leading their games as I type, which would put them both at 83-74.
Both the Tigers and Royals own the tiebreaker against the Mariners, and if they ended up all three tied, it’d still be the Tigers and Royals. So if tonights’s scores hold, for the Mariners to make the Postseason, they would have to win out (three at home against the A’s) and get to 85 wins, and either the Royals (one more at WSH and three at ATL) or Tigers (one more at home against TBR and three at home against CWS) would have to lose out.
The Twins are in an even tougher spot as they’re basically tied with the Mariners and losing tonight.
Nestor Cortes to the IL with a flexor strain in his elbow. Possibly (probably?) out for the rest of '24
Yankees have 1 more with Baltimore & 3 with Pitt (magic number for the ALE is 1). Cleveland has 3 against us, and needs to make up 2 games in the loss column to get the #1 seed in the AL.
