The Athletic has a long story explaining how the White Sox went from bad to historically bad. There’s a little (irrelevant) boo-hooing about Reinsdorf being cheap with amenities, but then you get to the heart of it: he’s been running the club like a family business, keeping people in roles beyond their competence, and steadfastly refusing to keep up with the times. That’s how you end up trying to compete with the likes of the Astros and Yankees with this:
That’s akin to your financial planner telling you “buy low, sell high”. Reminds me of how Bouton described the Yankee team doctor back in the day:
Doctor: “what’s wrong?”
Bouton: “my arm hurts when I throw”
Doctor: “if your arm hurts when you throw, don’t throw”
Bouton: “well when I can I start throwing again?”
Doctor: “when it stops hurting”
If the Twins and Tigers (or anybody else) remain tied for the final wild card spot in the AL, is there a playoff game, or is it resolved by some sequence of tiebreaker criteria? I seem to recall that they’ve changed to the latter in order to simplify scheduling logistics, but I’m not certain.
Nope. They did away with tiebreaker games in 2022. So all tiebreakers, whether for division or wild card spots goes like this:
Head to head record
Intradivision record
Interdivision record
Record in the last half of intraleague games
Last intraleague game (most recent intraleague win)
Hinch is a good manager but when a team has a pick in the top 12 for seven consecutive years and eight of the last nine. I bet there is also some talent for that manager to work with as well.
Speaking of the Tigers, top pitching prospect, Jackson Jobe has been called up for the last week of the season. Then I read this: Despite not being on the 40-man roster before Aug. 31, Jobe could still be eligible for the postseason via a petition to the commissioner’s office. I didn’t know about the petition thing before.
One of the most annoying things about this season is Robles getting DFA’d and then going on to play like an All-Star for the Mariners. He would have been useful in our outfield, but who could have predicted such a turnaround.
Robles has always been a good outfielder. He showed sings of becoming an improved hitter last year batting .299 but no power. he got off to a rough start this year, appeared in 14 games with the Nationals and DFA’d. Mike Rizzo is a dumbass. Struck gold in 2019, but his club has done nothing since but trade, sell, or give away valuable assets. I guess the owner loves that.
