Just curious, because I grew up with grandparents who pronounced “negro” like “negra” because that’s how their accents worked, and I remember it being a bit unconfortable/confusing.

I suspect he simply stumbled into a horrible bear trap.

I think the idea is that you can forgive basically anyone for anything at basically any time, and maybe—especially in the absence of evidence of assholery—should, because the alternative sucks.
