Their own video showed the hpu noting the visit in his notepad and signaling the dugout when he got back behind the plate.
From an above and beyond standpoint, with all the chaos it would be a simple thing to tell Baldelli face to face “Hey, that’s a visit”. But there was no formal obligation to do so.
Yeah, the subject of the discussion is irrelevant to it being a mound visit. They can talk about game stategy, the weather, Ted Lasso, or that broad in the fourth row with a nice rack…it’s still a mound visit.
I wonder if Dusty et al would have brought it up if the ump hadn’t signaled that it was a visit (or if they even noticed; I didn’t, but I can claim selective camera work as an excuse).
I’m guessing the Astros were disappointed to see A. Sanchez leave the game and would not have petitioned for him to have to.
And yes, the Twins broadcaster knew it right away, and even pointed out before Yuli’s at bat that it could be an issue should Sanchez struggle further that inning. Which is ironic as broadcasters are typically the last ones to clue in to what’s actually happening or the know the rules.
The bottom line is the manager, bench coach, and pitching coach all failed to realize that was a visit.
I don’t fault Baldelli for doing what he did to get his reliever warm (I don’t want someone getting hurt because they come in cold). But it is his fault for walking on the mound, talking to his pitcher, and not thinking to at least ask if that was an official visit.
The reliever gets as much time as he needs to warm up. The manager also gets an automatic ejection, but they don’t make a reliever come in and pitch cold. And yes, it’s entirely, 100% Baldelli’s own fault, even though he wanted a free one.
