I have most of them on ignore.

Which is why clocks are used today. Roy Oswalt is a role model in that regard. I think the perception problem is deeper than game length, but a faster contest eliminates a major naysayer talking point

I definitely think that is true to some extent. Today’s FBS college football games average about 3.5 hours in regulation, but there is no widespread complaining about that. Enforcing a pitch clock may not bring in a ton of new fans, but if it doesn’t materially affect the results on the field, why not try it?

Everyone’s favorite: check swing where HPU makes the call.

probably did, but did you take them to the game? It helps at times. Different ways of watching, err or listening to the stros. In college used to listen to them with group on radio, that was always pretty fun.

Man, that was a terrible call.

It was brutal.

He’s getting roasted for smiling after he ejected Arrenado.

I’ll give him a small benefit of the doubt that the smile was at the words Nolan used, but it’s a brutal look for an umpire.

Run, rookie

Yeah, this is the Mets so F’em, but having said that, this is different…and pretty damn cool if you ask me.

MLB stars to play 4 exhibition games in S. Korea in November.

There were rumors this was part of the deal back when KBO was airing in the US during that first COVID year.

Breakdown of the ejection:

Ejection 143 - Nolan Arenado’s Reaction to Strike Three Swinging Call Humors Cubs, Umpire John Libka - YouTube

So the narrator thinks that was a legit swing call.

That is a very generous (for the ump) interpretation of the rule cited. Any forward motion could be called a swing.

It is interesting the the rule doesn’t mention barrel crossing the plate which is what we’ve all been looking at on every replay.

(She’s also way too lenient on the smile thing. Yes players and mangers act like assess and buffoons. But umpires have a duty to defuse and deescalate. No need to berate the guy on their channel, but acknowledge its a bad look.)

That breakdown was absolutely awful and I’m a little embarrassed for them.

But are you turning around screaming like Arenado?

The thing that struck me at first glance (and I’ve only looked at it once) was that there seemed to be no delay or surprise on Arenado’s part, as if he knew what the call was going to be and what his response would be.

I’m not sure the narrator (“she”, formerly “he”) thinks it was the right call, but pointing out why the umpire saw that as a swing. I just thought it might be interesting to point out an explanation of why an ump would see it that way in the moment, without the benefit of replay, and not just assume it was malicious intent. That said, that channel is run by amateur umpires, have a heavy bias towards defending them, and rarely criticize the umps. It’s typically a good channel, and they know the rules well and often point out things that aren’t obvious. But they do swing and miss sometimes. For example…they broke down Baldelli’s ejection the other night over the two mound visit thing. They sided with Baldelli, even though it was clearly a mound visit in multiple ways, not to mention the exactly correct application of the rules.

Yes I thought the point about a ball low and away means the hpu will see a lot of the barrel tracking toward the plate was insightful.

I do like the channel.

The balls/strikes ejections are tiresome (for them too) but they do a good job of explaining rules and umpire positioning/mechanics.

Seemed to me that as soon as Baldelli wandered over to the mound without the ump at his side he was doomed, regardless of what they actually talked about.
