She was recently on Blumâs podcast. Good listen. Gets a little into conspiracy theory in terms of âwho could be getting which ballsâ, but I wouldnât put it past Manfred to try.
Close isnât an attorney, but heâs a certified player agent, which does carry certain professional and ethical responsibilities, one of which is a âduty of loyaltyâ to act in his clientâs fiduciary best interest. But heâs not specifically required to disclose any and all offers from the club. Negotiating with the agent is essentially negotiating directly with the player, in that respect. So Iâm not sure itâs âmalpracticeâ. It is a dick move, however.
Freddie, during his ATL comeback last weekend, was broken up about leaving the team. So much so that Kershaw said he didnât want the Dodgers to feel like âsecond fiddleâ. He wanted 6 years, was told only 5, and then ATL traded for Olson and gave him 6? years.
It makes a whole lot more sense now. Close should be decertified if this is all true.
My understanding is that Freeman was demanding six years, and the Braves, even with their last minute offer, only offered 5/$140MM. The Dodgers offered 6/162MM. If Freeman was willing to take a 5-year deal, he should have made that clear to Close. I donât know if he did or he didnât, but what the Braves offered Olson is irrelevant. I understand Freemanâs emotional regret, but when you make it about the money, you have to accept the other side saying âpeace outâ.
