Which “Natural History Museum” would you recommend: NYC or DC
Houston
Thermopolis.
I was never a big NHM sort of dude before having a kid so I’ve never been to the one in NYC but holy shit does the one in DC suck. Everyone should feel free to disagree with me, but there’s no charge to enter and I wanted my money back.
Hudson may have the right answer, although I haven’t been in there in 40 years or more.
We’ve been over this. I’ve been banned.
I’m partial to the rocks and minerals selection and the quality of the collection at the HMNS is second to none. It’s not as big as the Smithsonian, but the quality is the finest in the world.
Went to Udvar-Hazy a few weeks ago and it was the highlight of my trip to DC.
LOL
As a ordinary commoner, I’m obviously not nearly as critical as some but the Natural History Museum in London was a nice bit of wonderment to my simple brain. Also the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago was really cool.
The only Iron Maiden song I know is The Trooper, and it rocks. I was introduced to it by a bunch of ninth graders at a School of Rock event, which is one of the best things America has going right now.
If I would have known you were going to DC, I could have arranged some pretty cool behind-the-scenes tours. At the White House, for sure and maybe even the Capital.
Next time…
The Library of Congress is one of my favorite buildings in D.C. I’ll take the das VIP tour of that next time I’m in town.
When I was based out of Chicago O’hare in my previous life/airline, I remember Ed Force One being parked for several days on the remote ramp on the east side of ORD as Iron Maiden was playing some gigs.
It was a beautiful bird.
I used to live near the Udvar-Hazy Center at my first airline 21 years ago being based at Dulles.
I was a fucking kid in a candy store when it opened and I went there often.
The collection is superb, and it’s pretty cool whenever they intake aircraft for the museum and the birds are flown in and then taxi to the receiving area on the SE side of the airport.
You got it. I have a standing invitation for the uber-special behind the scenes tour there from their CIO. She’s a friend.
I’ll happily abuse your hospitality with that offer as well. I’d offer some wine as compensation, but unfortunately I’m not sure if you’d be able to enjoy it.
Sure thing! And, no comp needed! It’s all part of being a public servant. And a friend to my friends, the lunatics of the TZ.
Wasn’t sure which thread to post this, but here’s a story of a Coast Guard rescue squad during the Kerrville flood. It sounds like they did some serious flying, and I didn’t think about everyone having about 15 helicopters in the same area. It’s amazing there were no accidents
Two very important stories here. The main one is about the arrogant fuckstick who fudged his instrument experience and killed his family.
The secondary story is about the guy who made the right choices, and explains just how fucking hard flying purely on instruments truly is. When you can see, you fly on your senses; when you can’t see, your senses are trying to kill you.
