Can they be “intentionally” turned off?
My ex-girlfriends are not germane to this discussion.
The goddamn Germans ain’t got nothin to do with it
Of course.
That’s how we shut down an engine.
When we pull into the gate.
Suicide by plane, not an error at all.
Yeah, I was more talking about “in-flight” without some sort of alarms or secondary safties going off. I guess in case of engine fire you’d need to selectively do that too
Thought about you historians/flyboys when the algorithm gave me this on my google feed earlier:
Glamour often overshadowed actual impact. The Spitfire is what everyone thinks about from the Battle of Britain, but the vast majority of the fighting was done by Hawker Hurricanes. They had a more traditional construction which traded a modicum of performance for sturdiness and ease of repair.
Similarly, the German Tiger tank was every bit as formidable as its reputation suggests, but only when it was working. Which wasn’t often.
Dammit, now you’ve got me mentally singing my 2nd favorite Iron Maiden song
Isn’t it hard enough having a first favorite Iron Maiden song?
Don’t get me started, I have 2 favorites from way back in the 80’s
I can come up with more but I really don’t want to. “Aces High” is a fucking jam.
Absolutely (they sure as fuck were to start with), but what year, what level, after what back-and-forth bombings of what cities by the RAF/UAF (day/night) was their industrial production totally taken out of service?
There was also the difference in repair philosophy: Shermans and their ilk were designed so that most minor to intermediate repairs could be performed by the tractor-raised farmboys that were driving them, and major components (e.g., transmissions) could be replaced in the field (with some heavy equipment). The German tanks generally had to be hauled to a service area to be serviced by specialized mechanics with bulky equipment (gantries, hoists, etc). The Allies recognized this and started attacking the relatively lightly defended service depots, turning that into an Achilles heel.
The only thing worse than a Sherman was a Japanese tank in the Pacific
It’s pretty remarkable that the Aviation thread took this minor detour given Iron Maiden’s singer (“singer”) is in fact a pilot and at one point flew commercial jets as a sort of hobby as I understand it. He also pilots the band’s planes, and on one tour they used a 747-400, which is one of my favorite planes anywhere.
It’s difficult for me to reconcile the image of a guy screaming his insides out at night and the next morning sitting there in his pilot’s uniform calmly going over the preflight checklist with his co-pilot.
I don’t really care what sort of music these goons play, this is pretty damn cool:
“THE” Bruce Dickinson
They may have had about 3 singers, don’t care…but seeing them at the Summit in the 80’s was pretty damn cool
…and like I said earlier, those are my 2 favorite (only) songs of theirs:
Run to the Hills
Aces High
…
that’s it
It’s possible I was in the wrong business.
I just blasted through this thread again and am pleased to report that my son and I have in fact since visited the Air and Space Museum at Dulles. We did arrive at its open and we did visit while school was in session. Check and check. It was great. It was far, far better than the museum on the Mall which, frankly, is bullshit.
